My wife and I are off to Iceland for 14 days in a week or so. We are essentially traveling the Ring Road in a clockwise direction from Reykjavik and staying in 7 different towns along the way. I am very vague about details because I can't pry the guide books away from her! If anyone here has been, I would enjoy hearing your take on it.

Thanks for your time.

I haven't been, but I've been lusting for a trip to Iceland, riding the ring road on my scooter (probably won't happen since there doesn't seem to be any reasonable way to get it there from the States) or more likely, on a rented motorcycle.

Take a look at this thread from Varaflame, who kindly helped me out with some travel info:

A trip into east iceland (lots of photos)

I'm hoping to do it next year, but with one more daughter completing one more year of college to graduate (her graduation date is what my wife and I are now calling our "Tuition Independence Day" ) I might have to move that up by a year or so.

I love the land...I would much rather visit interesting geography than cities. Iceland has it all: Glaciers, geysers, volcanoes, etc. in one place.

Have a great trip...post pics!

Hi Gojanego,
my wife and I went to Iceland this May and we thought it was fantastic. We were based in Reykjavik for 6 days and ventured out from there so we really only hit the south coast as far as Vik. While we were there it was perpetual daylight which was really odd but was great because the "nights" were never menacing so there'd be people strolling around like it was 2 in the afternoon and I never once saw police or heard a siren. The people are lovely, really laid back and English is spoken widely even if you try some Icelandic!! The words Tak for thank you or bless-bless for goodbye always got a smile we found. The ring road is just begging to be ridden around (hope to do it one day) it's mostly single track with some dual carriageway and the scenery is incredible going from Lunar landscape to green plains to stunning mountains in what seemed to be 1 mile, we just kept stopping and going for walks and then theres the geothermal streams that are hot to the touch and steam rises from them. There are two waterfalls Gullfoss & Selfoss that are beautiful and you can go right up to them plus theres the Geysirs dotted around. Have you booked a 4x4 car? as an ordinary 2-wheel drive vehicle wont get you past certain roads (and we tried in our Toyota Yaris and nearly got stuck in deep Ash), but these roads tend to lead towards the glaciers or more deserted areas. The biggest drawback with Iceland (apart from the sulphur smelling water from the taps...it's all naturally produced from the volcanic streams) is that it is very expensive. We had our own apartment and only ate out twice! Plus they eat Puffin and rotting fish! Sorry man, I'm rambling, it's great simple as that, if you need any specifics do ask and I'll do my best to answer if I can...

I was there in 1996 briefly on way to UK. The Icelandic landscape was beautiful, you'll eat well if you enjoy fish, outdoor adventures abound, the people are very nice and take their personal responsibilities exceedingly seriously. Though it can be expensive (importing a whole lot of stuff will do that) it is a very rewarding trip.
