Hey,
I was hoping someone can help me out. I'm considering purchasing a second hand scooter (2007 Vespa LX150) for about $2000 CND. There are some minor cosmetic damages, but nothing major. The scooter has approx 6700Km. There are no upgrades (i.e. top box, chrome...)

I know I need to change the brakes. Anyone can tell me the costs involved? Any other repairs I should be aware at this mileage?
Do you guys thing the price is fair?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Welcome to MV!

With 2006 LX 150s being listed for around 2500 US, 2000 Cnd for a good condition 2007 seems fair enough given the recent flood of newer Vespas into the Toronto market (thank you Canadian Scooter Corp!). I'd make sure that it was a 150, and not a 50cc model. They essentially look identical apart from the 150 glued on the side. The black vehicle plate on the glovebox door will tell you the true displacement of the motor.

Unfortunately, you don't provide a lot of other information for someone to base a judgment on. You mention cosmetic damage. Are you sure that it is cosmetic or could the frame have been compromised? You don't list your background with scootering, so assuming that you are new, you need to realize that the body of the Vespa (particularly the floor region) is the frame. Bend the body, bend the frame. Dents in the side or front may be another matter, as long as the body remains true. Consider posting some pictures if you have them.

Personally, I would not buy a modern Vespa that does not have the brown key to match the regular blue one. I would also be interested in seeing what warranty work may have been done on the scooter. If the person was taking it to a local shop, they may be able to comment on the vehicle.

Hope that it all works out in your favour.

What Michael said...

But in addition, I'd ask why you think you need to replace the brakes at that mileage? Normally the pads and shoes on an LX last far longer than that. If the scooter hasn't been serviced regularly you do need to replace the brake fluid as this absorbs water over time. The roller weights in the CVT (auto transmission) may be nearing the end of their lives as well, especially if you hear rattling from the transmission.

Welcome!

6700 km is pretty low mileage for a 2007 scooter. For comparison, I mainly ride 6 months a year while commuting in the city, and will accumulate about 3-4000 km over on an annual basis. So, unless the scooter was sold in 2008 as a 2007 model (it happens), assume that it has been sitting. You may have to obtain a new battery, as the old one is likely nearing the end of its health. It is simple enough to check whether the battery is okay or not with a multimeter, and by gazing into the liquid cells. If the scooter has been sitting for a time, it may need to have the carb cleaned from old, fouled gas. You might as well inspect the integrity of the tires, though they are likely okay.

Regarding the brakes. Changing the front brake pads yourself is not too difficult if you have worked on vehicles in the past. Replacing the rear is more challenging, and involves removing the muffler and rear wheel as intermediate steps. Still, since the scooter is second hand, and there are other systems you'll want to check (battery, electricals, fuel) it is worth bringing it into a dealer/mechanic for a good comprehensive once over. They will be able to make sure any missed service issues can also be addressed at that time.

That is my 2 cents, and what I would do.

Agreed. I've had my scooter since 2006 and the pads are still okay (even though I am hard on the front brake!). You will know if the brake fluid needs to be changed if it is black, or if it hadn't been changed before. I was assuming that the rear brake problem was rust on the drums from sitting unused outside in a wet climate. Perhaps you just need to adjust them.

Still, if there was a brake issue, I would want to make sure that it is mechanically sound and not chance it. Still worth the money to have a proper mechanic lay hands upon it.

OK. I admit I had to use a converter to see what 6700 km was in miles. It's 4163+/-. So with that being said, if the seller can't provide maintenance records, I would also (in addition to what the others posted):
  • Change the engine oil
  • Change the hub/gear box oil
  • If needed change the tires
All of these are easy enough to do yourself.

If you want to see what's involved in all of this, you can view some maintenance videos here.

Good luck and I hope it all works out for you.

Thanks for everyone's help. I actually ended up purchasing a Yamaha Vino 125 (2007).

I found the Vino for the same price with only 1000km (600 miles) and no damage.

I decided against the Vespa because of the questionable damage to the side of the floor frame. Last thing I wanted was to buy it with a compromised frame, just not worth the risk. Also, at this time and place I don't really have the mind set for repairs.

Anyhow... the Vino is great. A bit less kick than the LX150, but enough for me. I also like the retro motorcycle-like look.

Thanks again for all the input.

The Vino 125 is a great scooter. I had one for 4 years before purchasing my Vespa. It's very reliable & fun to ride. Do a Google search and you'll find several Vino sites and groups online. If and when you decide to buy a Vespa you'll find the Vino very easy to sell. Cheers !
