This is likely to be the last order of Fuzzy Washers so get 'em while they're hot. They will arrive here next week and shipped immediately. For the folks new to the concept I'll summarize:
What is it?
Quote:
The Fuzzy Washer is a thin precision 1mm thick washer that is inserted next to the stock variator spacer washer on 400 & 500 MP3's. It will also work on similar scooters I have one report of a BV500. Up to two can be inserted for different levels of performance. Some folks prefer one, others prefer two. It works by spacing the pulley apart which in effect lowers your gear ratio. This translates into faster acceleration with only a slight penalty in top speed. Since the top speed is around 90 mph it''s a safe bet this isn't a concern.
Is the performance increase worth it?
Quote:
Worth is relative to each individual. I do seem to recall one person seemed to think that it wasn't worth it. The rest of us had an ear-splitting grin the first time we twisted the throttle. I bet most still do.
Will it work with my JCosta?
Quote:
I have reports from 2 users, one with a 500 - the other with a 400. They tell me it works great! But I cannot personally vouch for this as I do not have a JCosta installed.
Will it work with Dr. Pulley sliders?
Quote:
I can in fact vouch for these. I have tried 16, 17 and 19 gram weights and I have settled on the 17 as the optimum for my tastes. To my mind the Dr. Pulley and Fuzzy Washer compliment each other very well indeed.
Any cons?
Quote:
You have to disassemble your transmission to the same point as if you were replacing your drive belt. Many users install their Fuzzy Washer at the time their belts are replaced. You can also do the job yourself at any time. It's not complicated and there are several threads on the Modern Vespa MP3 forum describing in detail how to do it.
Quote:
A couple of users (including me) have reported the belt rubbing. This has so far been isolated to scooters with the old style belt which has higher "teeth" on the outer side. The belt tends to ride higher in the pulley at idle and with the old style belts it may rub. The typical rub spot is the rear of the transmission cover at the rear. A little grinding will eliminate the problem or change to the new style belt - which most scooters have anyway. This has also been covered in a MP3 forum post and is considered a minor issue. I do feel it's my responsibility to inform potential buyers and I assume no liability for any installation issues. I sold a 100 the last issue and only 3 or 4 people reported any rubbing.
How much and to whom do I pay for this little marvel?
Quote:
The cost is $11 for the first washer and $10 for a second washer. This is postpaid anywhere worldwide.

I hate saying no - especially to more than a few people... As long as I break clear I'm happy. Perhaps I'll take it to fleaBay.

There are more since I had to make a minimum order - so now's the time to take these off my hands and put a big grin on your mug!

I'm new to the forums and late to the mod and thread. If there are any still available I'm interested in purchasing two.

I'm looking to improve the performance of my MP3 500. I commute on the freeway and in city traffic every weekday. I also go for longer rides on the weekend. Greater acceleration off the line is helpful when in downtown Seattle, but I also ride at 75 to 80 mph on the freeway pretty regularly. For those of you who have installed the 1mm fuzzy washer and the 16g Dr. Sliders can you comment on the change in handling at higher speeds. I already gather that acceleration is greatly improved off the line, but how has your fuel economy and top speed changed?

There's already a thread where people weighed in on their experiences with the Fuzzy Washer. Basically you have a lower gear which not only translates into better off-line performance but better hill-climbing too. You will lose a couple of mph off the top end. "handling at speed" is more a function of teh variator - I assume you're looking for acceleration there. The JCosta and the Dr Pulley sliders are both recommended for that and low speed maneuverability.

I've already ordered a pair for our two scoots (1 each); just waiting now for the delivery so I can start my first real mod to this machine! But I was curious given that you started off this thread with "this is likely to be my last order," so I was curious as to your thoughts about longevity of the washer itself. Is there any good reason to think it won't last as long as the bike (it is only 1 mm thick after all)...if so, and you still have a few, I'll probably get a couple of spares just to be safe...

With the stock variator the washer is not a wear part and is only in compression holding the variator halves apart. It will last a long long time.
