...for pediatric cancer research at Sloan Kettering.

I am on the board of directors of a charity that has an annual family fun day carnival in the Hamptons for kids with cancer. It was this past weekend. We are building a 1st of it's kind cell therapy lab for pediatric cancer at MSK. I am still exhausted, but it was all worth it in the end. There were live auctions, silent auctions, rides, mini golf, carnival games, and some really good food. I am so proud of everyone involved.

I remember having a Muscular Dystrophy carnival with I was just a kid. We got a kit in the mail with suggestions and directions.

So I draped a blanket over a clothes line and made a tent. Then I dressed up like a fortune teller and made up fortunes for a dime, using a Magic 8 Ball.

My other friends and siblings ran games and makeshift rides and bingo. Most of the prizes were our old toys and stuffed animals.

We didn't make a half a million, only about $34.00. But we felt great!

You're welcome. I am sorry about your mom and cousin. My mother died of cancer as well. I also have a nephew who was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma at age 4. He is the inspiration for the foundation. Thankfully he is in remission at age 7.

$34.00 is pretty good for a kid. We all have to start somewhere. You should continue on with it.

Thanks! we are trying to fund a cell therapy lab aimed at pediatric cancers at Memorial Sloan Kettering. The possibilities with cell therapy are endless. It is still in it's infancy, yet I hear amazing success stories all the time. That is why this research lab is so important. We need to give Sloan $5 million to get it off the ground. After this event, we are at just over a million, so there is still a ways to go.

Thank you SANDMAN. Sloan Kettering is a great place. I had a friend who worked there back in the 70's and even then it was cutting edge. They had this cool vending machine that dispensed meds. I used to help her re-order medications (nurse here ) What's really cool is that all the research and stuff being made to cure cancer also works well with people who have auto immune diseases. 8)

I have to admit, I was feeling a bit like Clark Griswold at the side of the pool. lol. She is very sweet. Talking to her, I got the feeling that her whole life revolved around cancer charities. She was very knowledgeable, not just about fund raising, but even about many of the medical aspects of cancer. She was going to a breast cancer fundraiser after ours was over.

Judy, I didn't realize that, but it makes perfect sense to me. Autoimmune diseases are terrible as well. They can be debilitating, and rather than kill you relatively quickly like cancer, depending on the type, they cause a slow decline over decades, often making multiple surgeries necessary, etc. Not very fun.

I like to think the cell therapy lab like building a space shuttle. You get the benefit of the shuttle, but there are so many new inventions (like microwave ovens) created as a side effect of building the shuttle itself. If we can build a few microwaves in the process, that's awesome!

Congratulations!

I'm a lab tech at a non-profit cancer research center working on clinical trials for new leukemia treatments. I know firsthand the value of what you do.

Your efforts are incredibly important, and the work you aim to support is vital.
