Modern Vespa

The blogosphere is on fire at the moment with news of an image map of the top 1,000,000 web icons (or "favicons") on the web. (Our favicon is the little tiny mod target you see next to https://modernvespa.com in the address bar).

Much to my surprise, Modern Vespa made the cut, and has a very, very small presence on the resulting image map. The size of each favicon in this image is directly proportional to the Alexa traffic rankings for that site. Not only is Modern Vespa well within that million, we also (today) rank at around 130,000 worldwide. Minor in the grand scheme of things, but way better than I would have guessed.

The image map is below. There's an interactive map where you can zoom in and out and pan around to see what's there. You can also look up a specific site, and it'll show you where it is on the map.

Jess has really created something unique here. I remember the crap going on at BBS and people were saying, "this sucks, we need a better place." Jess started it and I was #72 I think (under the name Dixicrat, which I dropped after a bunch of racist stuff and started a new ID).

In general this is the most civil and informative level of intercourse on the web (No not that. Conversation!)

I think the frequency of repeating threads (wooden Vespa, camper APE, Vespa with VW bus sidecar) is a measure of the recruitment of new readers. The next thing is for Jess to sell it to Google and they start mining our data.

Anyway, congratulations Jess. Success is a beautiful thing.

Yep, I've got to hand it to you Jess. I really don't know you but it says something about you that you've been able to hold this site together and keep it going. As big as the internet is, to take a site devoted to vespas and be in the top million is quite an accomplishment.
