Garmin recalling GPS devices over batteries
1.3 million Nuvi devices affected worldwide for possible overheating issue

NEW YORK - Navigation device maker Garmin Ltd. said Wednesday it is recalling roughly 1.3 million Nuvi GPS devices worldwide because their batteries have the potential to overheat and create a fire hazard.

About 796,000 of the GPS units were sold in the U.S.

Garmin said that certain batteries provided by a separate company have overheated in some Nuvi models. The company said it has identified fewer than 10 cases of overheating, none of which produced any property damage or injury.

Garmin said the battery supplier has agreed to share the cost of replacing the battery packs and that the recall will not have a material affect on its financial results.

It said owners should not attempt to remove or service the battery on their own, and asked that any affected unit be taken to a Garmin-authorized facility.

It's awesome how the news outfit tells you there's a recall but don't list the affected models.

For those of you interested in if your model's in the recall, check this link (you enter your serial number and it tells you if yours is on the recall list):

https://my.garmin.com/rma/recallLanding.faces

The recall affects these models:

* nüvi 200W, 250W, & 260W
* nüvi 7xx (where xx is a two-digit number)

Thanks for the link. I have a Nuvi at home that "fried" when I left it on the car charger overnight. Thing was hotter than a pistol when I picked it up in the morning. I'll enter the serial number tonight to see if mine is one of the affected ones.

One good thing is that I purchased a replacement off the net that has the Euro maps built in instead of having to use a micro-SD card for the foreign maps.

Some sources do and some don't. The DailyFinance article I linked in my thread gave the link to Garmin. [NSR] Garmin Nuvi Recall

I guess MSNBC wants to make people work harder
