to be your favorite beer . . .

You know, I don't get very many Australian ales in my neck of the woods...just Foster's bitter from time to time. I saw Coopers pale ale the other day, and I'll have to give that a try.

Stinkyjones...Free State does make some of my very favorite beers, but they're not available for wide distribution (they are now bottleing Copperhead Pale Ale, Ad Astra, Golden and their Oatmeal Stout). I prefer a lot of their more seasonal beers - John Brown Ale (which they won't bottle for sale locally because they're afraid it won't sell in Missouri), their saisson, and many, many others. It's definitely my favorite brew pub, anywhere.
I currently live down the street from the 75th Street Brewery, and love their Muddy Mo' Irish Stout and Possum Trot Brown ale. It's funny, at this brewpub, I prefer those two flagship brews but don't like their seasonal offerings (whereas at Free State I prefer the seasonal offerings although I really like the flagship brews, too). 75th street's brews are only available onsite, so I didn't mention them, either. ![]() Cornstalker Dark Wheat is my new favorite but it will be gone by the end of the week at my local pub.....I'm sure I had something to do with the short supply.

I'm hoping to move back to Lawrence...provided the freakin' housing market improves enough to sell my house. You might find me sitting on that porch on a regular basis within the next year or two. Plus, for a brew pub, the food is great and cheap.
That's part of the reason I moved up to a good 150 (ET4). I can ride in on K32 if I miss the shuttle van that runs to my office. Eric |

Jayhawk, Stinky: Love Free State Brewery. It opened my senior year at KU. I spent a wee bit of time there. I've recently started going to the Blind Tiger Brewery in Topeka. It's a bit of a jaunt, but the beer and food is pretty good. I have a few growlers of their IPA in my chiller right now

Yummy. Meal in a bottle.
Quote: St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout At the World Beer Championship in 1994, St-Ambroise Oatmeal Stout received the second highest rating of the over 200 beers in the competition and it won one of only nine platinum medals awarded. Brewed from 40 percent dark malts and roasted barley, this intensely black ale carries strong hints of espresso and chocolate. Oatmeal contributes body and a long-lasting mocha-colored head to this well-hopped beer. 5% alc/vol Available in Bottles and Draft ![]() |

New Belgium just started distributing in Virginia. You can find Ranger and Fat Tire all over the place at a good price. Ranger has just jumped close to the top of my favorite IPA list.

My favorite beer is actually the stuff I make myself. Although I keg most of it I do bottle it every now and then, which gives me an opportunity to make labels. Here's one from last winter.

For you home brewers, what reading would you recommend for me?
I am interested in brewing my own. I do make my own wine, but I'm not familiar with the beer process. I do love to read and learn. |

I do love to read and learn. www.homebrewersassociation.org www.homebrewtalk.com A couple of good books for beginning brewers are How To Brew by John Palmer (who also has a website: howtobrew.com) and The Complete Joy of Homebrewing by Charlie Papazian. There are plenty of others but all you need to get started is some basic information. You can buy decent brewing starter supplies and beer kits from quite a few good online vendors. My favorites are: austinhomebrew.com midwestsupplies, com morebeer.com northernbrewer.com Better yet, if you have a local brewing supply store, go in and start chatting with the folks there. While the prices are apt to be a bit higher than what you can find online, being able to speak with someone local who knows what they're doing is invaluable. If you make your own wine then you'll find brewing beer to be just as simple. If you can follow a recipe, you can brew beer. I'll be happy to chat further with you if you'd like. Just PM me. |
