I signed up as a member of Modernvespa.com forums last night and like an idiot used the same password as my gmail accout and had that email as my email for my user name. Someone from Modernvespa.com hacked that gmail account and used it to send spam. Considering this is the only forum I signed up for and the only time I did something that dumb, the hacker obviously either belongs to or has access to modernvespa.com personal information. protect yourself I reported it to FBI.

I highly doubt that. Passwords on mv are stored in hash form that makes it impossible -- even for me -- to see the actual password. Even if Modern Vespa were hacked -- which it does not appear to have been -- an attacker couldn't retrieve any passwords at all.

Even more likely would be that the OP has a compromised Windows machine, and every keystroke is logged.

But even that's unlikely, making me think this whole report is a hoax.

Has the spam email been sent from your Gmail account?
If you log in and look at the sent items, is it there?

It's trivially easy to send messages with a fake "from" field and what usually happens is that someone else has their PC compromised by malware and it uses random addresses from the address book to send out spam messages. The first you will know about it is when undeliverable reports come back to you.

It's far more likely that this has happened than someone has hacked MV's forum database.

Now I know why my feet began to stink. Right up until that time I didn't have a problem, and then all of a sudden I noticed my feet beginning to stink. Well, actually more than normal.

It's apparently incredibly easy and common to hack email accounts on Gmail and Yahoo. I learned about this the hard way as well. Just change your Gmail password, and the spam emails will stop. Now, how are people getting the passwords? I don't know. Maybe Yahoo and Gmail are just not very secure. Or maybe there are a billion China men using a billion computers to crack the passwords, so that they can send spam for porno and erectile dysfunction meds. Try searching on the web for hacking Yahoo or Gmail accounts, and you will find lots of legitimate links. I even saw a ton of complaints about this on the Yahoo help forum.

Yup. I regularly get spam supposedly from my own yahoo account. Have for years. What bugs me is that other people are probably getting them, too and think I'm the jerk sending them.

I didn't realize what happened until someone forwarded me one of the spam emails from my account. Apparently, it sent spam to people, maybe everyone, that were in my Yahoo address book. I felt really bad, but it wasn't my fault. I haven't had any problems, since I changed my password. I guess I will have to keep changing it everytime it gets hacked. I just hope it doesn't happen often.

You know, it's more than likely someone's just spoofing the SMTP sender than your acct being hacked. After all it is literally just a text field in the message data.

I thought about that. If that's the case, then how do you explain them emailing most, if not all, of the people in my Yahoo address book. I don't use Outlook, so they weren't stealing it from that address book. The spam that was forwarded to me included about the top third of my Yahoo address book in the to line, in alphabetical order according to user name, not email address It just seems that the only way to do that is to either get my password or to actually hack into Yahoo's system. I was actually a little amazed myself, especially since one of our closest friends is a security expert, so we know about a lot of the hacking techniques. I just figured no one would waste the time, money, or energy to crack or obtain my password.

Don't know why, I flashed on a quote from one of my favorite movies:
Quote:
Walter Sobchak: What the fuck are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I'm talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT... Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.

The Dude: Walter, this isn't a guy who built the railroads here. This is a guy...

Walter Sobchak: What the fuck are you...?

The Dude: Walter, he peed on my rug!

Donny: He peed on the Dude's rug.

Walter Sobchak: Donny you're out of your element! Dude, the Chinaman is not the issue here!
The worst part is that Walter goes all PC on The Dude about the use of 'chinaman' and then goes on to use it himself.

I'm sorry, what were we talking about?
