I signed up as a member of Modernvespa.com forums last night and like an idiot used the same password as my gmail accout and had that email as my email for my user name. Someone from Modernvespa.com hacked that gmail account and used it to send spam. Considering this is the only forum I signed up for and the only time I did something that dumb, the hacker obviously either belongs to or has access to modernvespa.com personal information. protect yourself I reported it to FBI.

I highly doubt that. Passwords on mv are stored in hash form that makes it impossible -- even for me -- to see the actual password. Even if Modern Vespa were hacked -- which it does not appear to have been -- an attacker couldn't retrieve any passwords at all.

But the password is sent in cleartext so some l33t hacker sitting at the starbucks you you log in from could see it.

Has the spam email been sent from your Gmail account?
If you log in and look at the sent items, is it there? It's trivially easy to send messages with a fake "from" field and what usually happens is that someone else has their PC compromised by malware and it uses random addresses from the address book to send out spam messages. The first you will know about it is when undeliverable reports come back to you. It's far more likely that this has happened than someone has hacked MV's forum database. |

Key logger would be my guess.
Ive been on MV since 07 and never had an issue. Im still waiting for my 5k post toaster and my autographed moderators swimsuit calendar for 6k post. I have filed a claim with the MV compliant department but only received the automated response "thank you for complaint, at this we dont care or were on a ride, please try again later". ![]() |

It's apparently incredibly easy and common to hack email accounts on Gmail and Yahoo. I learned about this the hard way as well. Just change your Gmail password, and the spam emails will stop. Now, how are people getting the passwords? I don't know. Maybe Yahoo and Gmail are just not very secure. Or maybe there are a billion China men using a billion computers to crack the passwords, so that they can send spam for porno and erectile dysfunction meds. Try searching on the web for hacking Yahoo or Gmail accounts, and you will find lots of legitimate links. I even saw a ton of complaints about this on the Yahoo help forum.
