TurtleGT wrote: Perhaps you guys could have a bit more compassion for a wrong, but understandably upset member?? Furthermore, the OP has not given any useful detail on which to act -- he did not contact me with a sample of the spam or present any details of the attack. He didn't even indicate whether the supposed spam that was sent shows up in his gmail Sent folder, which would indicate that his account was actually used for the attack. I think it's far more likely (if any spam was actually sent) that some spammer is simply using his gmail address as a return address on spam sent from somewhere else, which is an extremely common tactic. No accounts anywhere need to be hacked. Instead, the OP came directly here and -- on his first post -- "warned" everyone that someone from Modern Vespa had maliciously used his gmail account password to hack into his gmail account. Kind of like the smear campaigns that we prohibit here. The fact that the OP additionally claims to have reported "it" (whatever that is) to the FBI speaks volumes about the veracity of his story. So no, Linda, I'm not going to give the OP any compassion. His post has all the hallmarks of complete and utter bullshit. Whether this bullshit is malicious or simply misguided is open to interpretation. So please put down your pitchfork and use some tiny bit of intellect instead of succumbing to superstition. There will be no witches burned here today. ⚠️ Last edited by jess on UTC; edited 1 time

Maybe you sent or forwarded an email to "most, if not all, of the people in my Yahoo address book," either in the "To:" box or the "Cc:" box. Someone on that list forwarded it to someone else who forwarded it.... Eventually it came to either a spammer or someone whose computer had been infected and all those addresses ended up in the hands of a spammer. That's why it's always a good idea to use the "Bcc:" box when sending to multiple recipients. |

Yahoo even has a method to put an individual signature or tag on the login page, so that you know it is a legitimate. Why would they do that, if people had not already been doing it? What gets my goat is that they did it to send spam? I am glad that they didn't get any private info and use it, but damn, have some higher, more important goal than spam |

A script ran through "smart" dictionary logic for log-in names, then for each name ran through a similar technique for password combinations until it hit one that worked, and blammo. webmail is the new open SMTP relay. No server side authentication on the person to validate the sender. Boon to spammers. |

Usually when someone with no history on a forum making accusations about something or coming off negative and then does not reply it indicates they were trolling and trying to either hurt the forum or just trying to stir up crap. I suppose there is a chance that you are correct that is why I said "most likely" and not definitely. On another issue. Have you considered making it to the Maggie Valley, NC ride on the weekend of the 17th? Quite a few of us are showing up...there is a thread about it in the Ralllies and Events section. |

Someone from Modernvespa.com hacked that gmail account and used it to send spam. Considering this is the only forum I signed up for and the only time I did something that dumb, the hacker obviously either belongs to or has access to modernvespa.com personal information. protect yourself I reported it to FBI. |

This is a classic fault of logic known as post hoc ergo propter hoc, or (loosely) afterwards, therefore because of. The fact that something happened after a particular event is no guarantee that it was caused by the event in question, and people believing otherwise are little better than superstitious villagers burning some poor woman at the stake because their crops went bad. PS. Does the bikini shot now make Genie a 'bunny'? <ducks> |
