Home from Day 1 of 2 and I am exhausted!

The first few hours of classroom stuff was pretty boring. Nothing that hasn't been covered in the DMV study manual or on here (thanks guys for all the info!).

The riding part was really fun, though. And some of it was tough! I still suck at tight, low speed turns, so some of the cone-swerving exercises were fairly comical. Coming from the scoot, I kept forgetting that I had a brake at my feet, so that took some getting used to, but all those years driving an older car with a manual transmission made it pretty simple to add in the shifting part of it. Though, I still love the ease of the twist and go Vespa!

It was funny to hear all the other brand new riders talking about the big-ass bikes they were planning on getting. Does one really need 1200cc's? Especially as a newbie? Seems a bit...uh...disastrous, to me! And I thought I was a road hazard! Haha

Anyway, I'm in serious need of a nap after today!

I remember the first day being exhausting. It didn't help that it was over 100F. I actually did mine on their scooter. I wish I had done it on the motorcycle. It might have made the boring parts more interesting. I did really well on the tight slow turns, but the cones always confused me in the 30mph turn (you will probably get to it tomorrow, if you haven't already). I guess my track days have trained me to not look at cones, so it was hard to determine where the actual turn was without looking at the cones Clown emoticon

Have fun and stay hydrated. Although, it may not be hot there.

Oh, it WAS hot! It was something like 90F and and we were having crazy high winds today too (something like 25-45 mph with gusts up to 60 mph - it was crazy!), which made everything more interesting.

I saw a lot of that attitude too. One middle-aged guy who claimed he wanted 'something small, around 1200' ended up failing the course. Another lady with a custom painted helmet and custom painted bike on the way dropped her bike hard, then quit. Pretty surreal, but worth putting up with for the license and safety benefits.

My class was pretty cool. The people that talked shit actually knew what they were doing. The rest of us were acknowledgingly and knowingly humble. One guy passed, but only by a few points. He decided that he wasn't ready to get his license or a bike. I was impressed.

Congrats on joining your MSF course.
On my MSF course there were three women who's partners had opened a motorcycle dealership. The girls were all sitting their licences so they could 'walk the talk' in the shop. 8)
They were all on Honda 250 motocycles....
I was on a tiny Honda 50 scooter.

We all had a good laugh during the break - at my expense.

Good luck with the rest of your course.

ahh.. this takes me back... to january.
i remember a lot of the guys talking about their bikes they already had and blah blah blah.. but everyone was really friendly and supportive of everyone else. i was having a really hard time the first day on the bike because i had zero experience shifting (also, the shifter on the bike i had was really sticky on the way up) but one of the guys who had already been riding helped me out and gave me a few pointers and i started doing better.
i went home totally exhausted all 3 days. also, after the 2nd day i no longer had the use of my hands due to all the clutch and brake lever stuff. i tried to eat some chinese food and couldn't even hold my chopsticks! Laughing emoticon Crying or Very sad emoticon

the cone swerving was my favorite part! have fun and good luck on the final exam!

I ended up loving the safety course I took. It was hot, long and exhausting, but I felt much more confident in my skills afterwards.

We had a guy ride to the course with his brand new off the showroom floor Harley. It was purdy.... He had quite the macho attitude and was really talking shit. He was the only guy to dump his bike during training, which I found quite amusing.

Congrats on getting through the first day of the MSF! Clap emoticon

In our class we had an informal "what kind of bike will/do you ride?" Two thirds of the class wanted sportbikes, the other third cruisers and I was the only guy who wanted a vespa. A couple of the guys laughed at the idea of a vespa - of course karma came out and guys who laughed dropped their bikes.

Have fun and good luck on day 2!

The people I took my course from were really nice...two guys and a gal. It was really hot five years ago August, but the humidity is almost zilch here, which makes it tolerable.

They had almost all 250cc bikes, maybe two were 200's or so. I believe Colorado has a law about not using bikes over 250 or so for the MSF(?). What was neat was we got to choose from anything from sport bike styling to low slung cruisers (I chose the cruiser, and the guy said I looked like a natural for it...not sure about that statement).

At the end of the class the head guy came out and told us NOT to get a big bike. He said that there are always bargains on used large bikes from new riders that have traded them in because they couldn't handle them. But that smaller bikes were harder to find for the same reason.

He also said, and I found this to be important: get a bike within 5 weeks of passing the MSF course. He said if I was to wait longer, the skillset learned would start to be forgotten.

A year ago I fractured my knee slightly in a non-motorbike accident. It was small, but kept me off my Vespa for a awhile. I am getting started again, but do notice that my skills are needing touching up.

Again, my friendly MSF instructor's advice: If you have to, just put your foot down...it's 5 points(?), you still have another 15 points to rack up before failing in Colorado.

It's been so long I can't remember if one touchdown of foot is 2 points, and foot always down is five, or going out of the box is five with foot always down is 2...or what. Anyway, I was advised to just put my foot down and take the hit...better than dropping it.

Day 2 is actually next Saturday, which is great b/c my house needed some serious attention this morning, having been systematically neglected all summer...

I'm taking it on their motorcycles b/c I always wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle, so this is fun. Definitely requires more coordination than driving the scooter, what with needing to use my feet AND hands, but I'm getting it (I think!).

Can I confess that the real reason I took the class, aside from the safety benefits and the insurance savings and blah blah blah, is that its the only way to get the motorcyle endorsement w/o (1) having to take a day off work and stand in the forever-long line at the DMV, since our state no longer allows online or mail renewal and (2) without having to surrender my license and get a new one (i.e. new photo). This way I should just be able to take the written test and get a sticker the same day. Because, damn it, I look good in that DL picture and am not looking forward to taking my chances on the next one! haha

For what it's worth, I dropped my Metro scoot on the figure 8 because my long-legged knees got tangled up with the handlebars. I was shaken up, but it was actually pretty funny. I was so happy my LXV150 was happily in my garage at home! I loved that course... I feel like it was completely worth while. And... I'm very proud of my new license!

Yup, I did mine in swealtering heat as well. It didn't help that I'm 6'6" with ridiculously long legs and had to fight the bike the whole day because it was so small either.

I remember being sore as hell after the first day of riding. I also failed to note that you had to have boots, so the first day I did it in insulated winter boots. That was a whole lot of fun.

My friends in Milford (near Cincinnati, OH) just took the MSF course and I thought this might interest some of you.

"Having attended our lecture time for the Motorcycle Safety course on Wednesday night, we were ready for our on-scooter/-bike time this afternoon. However, when we arrived at the Live Oaks riding range, a police car and the life squad was on the range. Apparently, a man from the morning group over braked in the last exercise of the morning and went high over the bars. Talk about being spooked. Our whole class was wondering what happened. Then we found out the guy broke his collar bone. So as you can imagine, there were 12 very careful riders in our group. It was a good day and Charlie and I learned a lot and found much more confidence than we had before.

We finished our course today and now have our cards for our motorcycle endorsement. Whoohoo! Our scooters showed that it was 114 degrees F on the range. It was soooo hot. A couple of the Hondas didn't want to start a few times. Our fans came on frequently, but did not overheat. I had some kind of oily drops on my floor board on both sides. When we got home, we decided to let it cool down before we started sleuthing the origin. That will have to be tomorrow.

The head instructor of the program was working with our class and its instructors. At the end of the class Chuck told Charlie if he had a group of 12 scooter riders that wanted to do the course, he would do special courses for them on a different schedule. He was also saying that this course cost $300 in New York. Ohio riders get a deal at $25. More than half the guys in our class have been riding bikes for years without endorsements. The said that they wanted breaks on their insurance and figured they could use the practice, too."

Yeah, I'll probably be one of the first in my circle to get the endorsement, though many have been riding for years. But I just can't stomach the thought of having to deal with any of the prosecutors or officers that I work with professionally; they aren't getting ANY chances to lord anything over me! Haha

I took the MSF for three reasons - for the added safety, to avoid taking the riding test at the DMV, and because I got a break on my insurance.

I really liked the chance to ride a motorcycle instead of a scooter. I'd been riding the scooter long enough that I was fairly comfortable with the mechanics of riding, so I could concentrate on learning to shift.

My scooter is a BV500 - probably bigger and heavier than any of the motorcycles they used in that class. And after 3 years and 6000 miles on it I still don't think I could pass the DMV riding test on it. The riding test has a 20' diameter circle made up of lines 2' apart. You have to be able to do 2 complete circles clockwise and counter-clockwise staying between the lines. I just can't do it on the BV500.

I think you'd be surprised. I took the ERC a year after getting my BV250 and was amazed at how much better I was. I handled the 360 turn, figure 8, etc. without ANY issues at all. I took the BRC on their Honda Nighthawks so it's roughly equivalent (engine/weight) to the BV250. The year of riding definitely helped.

In Texas in order to drive anything larger than 49cc you have to get your motorcycle license. In order for that to happen you have take the MSF course. I was lucky not only was the instructor great but we also had a motorcycle cop taking the course with his son. Everyone in the class was able to see it 3 times correctly before we had to do it. It was more than a little hot when I took it.
