other brands of scooters?..
Right now I've got two Vespas in the garage, and love them. A PX150 and a GTS250. The rumour mill suggests a new PX type scoot (manual twist shift gears) is meant to show up next year. If it does, I'm in.
I've held off on the Vespa 300 because there are a few things that , to be honest, infuriate me. The lack of a tripmeter with the dodgy fuel gauge is the main one. Yeah some 'hardcore' types will chime in and claim that there is no need for a tripmeter while scribbling notes at each gas stop to see how far they've gone... But it bugs the heck out of me, especially seeing that my 250 has one. As well as the rev counter and temp gauge that now is missing on the 300.
Come to think of it, every freakin' bike that I've owned in the last 20 years have had tripmeters! Why Piaggio, why?..
So like I mentioned, I'm a bike slut. If it has 2 wheels I'm interested. I've owned everything from Harleys to Moto Guzzis to Hondas to Kawasakis to Ducatis etc etc.
But now a Taiwanese bike has caught my eye. The Kymco Downtown 300i. First off, what a crap name but it looks like those stickers can be easily removed. The rest of the bike? Hmmm. 300cc FI liquid cooled motor. A real 300cc (298.9). 32hp. That's almost 50% more than the Vespa 300. 2 full size helmets can fit under the seat. It has a built in tyre pressure monitoring system. Adjustable brake levers. 12V power socket in the glove box. Push button adjustable windshield. Adjustable back rest. 3.3 gallon gas tank. 2 year warranty. $5699.
This thing will never replace the Vespas in my garage. But maybe it will slide in next to them?...
I think I'll have to call Father Guido Sarducci and ask for his advice..

Go for it!

In my experience, though, some of those gadgets like the tire pressure monitoring systems can lull you into a false sense of security and fail. Kymcos have a good reputation for reliability, so the motor and the storage you describe get me excited. But some of the other whizbangs... eh I'd rather pay 300 less on the scoot and leave them out, since they might crap out after a couple of years.

Cool sounding machine though.

Seat height and weight are comparable to the GTS. That's good. Two bad things that I can see: I am not a fan of the looks, and it only comes in white. I can see it being competitive with the GTS, but it depends upon how important looks are. I can't really say how much they influence the North American market. It was my main influence, plus the option of decent displacement, compared to a Buddy or a Stella.

Just wanted to chime in that the lack of a tripmeter on the 300 bugs me as well. I'd stop well short of "infuriated", but I'm definitely annoyed.

I had a completely nonfunctional gas gauge for a while as well. It was one of the units that was missing a wire in the harness. Ran it out of gas twice, including once on the freeway.

I've considered the Dowtown 300i, as well, and for exactly the reasons you mentioned. The looks don't bother me, but for the time being, I'm in an obligate one-scooter relationship. That being the case, my 1 scooter has got to be a Vespa, and I have no reservations about my little LX150. It fits my needs perfectly, and in many cases, even better than a 250 or 300.

Just as you have admitted to being a bike slut, I will confess to being a name whore. In my eyes, it's "just another scooter" if it's not a Vespa. If I had a whole fleet, sure I'd have the Kymco 300. As it stands, though, I just can't bring myself to forgo my current 2-wheeler for another.

(in my best hillbilly voice)

"What kinda' skootur is that?! Is that one o' them Vespas???"

"No, it's a Kymco...a Kymco Downtown 300i."

"A *what*?!"

"A Kymco. You know, Kwang Yang Motor Co?"

"Naw, I don't....sounds Chinese - bet you wish it was a Vespa!"

[thinks to self]: "Never should've traded in that LX. Damnit."

Yup, if only one scoot - a Vespa. If two scoots - Vespas... Which is where I am now.

TPMS* will lull you into a false sense of security.

But it can possibly give you a few seconds of warning as your tire is going flat at WOT.

*TPMS = Tire Pressure Monitoring System - one of the things that should be required on all vehicles.

By the way, I find it kind of funny how modern scoot design is getting closer and closer to the sportbike look. I wonder whether that pisses off some crotch rocker riders.

EDIT: LOL, "crotch rocker" - sounds like a sex toy...

Well, for the third scoot, why not consider a shifty, an Italjet Dragster, or a Ruckus, especially if you like tinkering?

I've been waiting for a chance to see these in person since they came out in the rest of the world over a year ago.
I don't usually like the sport bike look in scooters but something about this one intrigues me. It's about the same
size as a Majesty or a Burgman 400 and has about the same HP but is 50 lbs. and $1000 less and comes with a two
year warranty. I wouldn't replace my Vespa but it might make a nice addition if it is as nice as it seems.

That's about how it goes. No one ever says anything about Vespas.

They're good bikes, Kymcos. Not Vespas, to be sure. Besides, the looks (to me) are more like BVs and Scarabeos. I expect folks riding them get the same questions and the same blank looks.

I totally agree about the LX 150. I adore my LX 150 but once I get this paid off. I'm going to be looking at a bigger scooter. I'm planning on keeping the Vespa. The Kymco Downtown is nice looking scooter. Last night I was looking at scooters online.

It's 100lbs less than the Burgman 400. 367lbs vs 474. A huge difference if we can trust the weights.

I hear ya about the trip odometer- I have a 1974 Kawasaki 175 and even it has one.

I'm really keen on the Piaggio BV300 should it actually make it over to the US, but I can't figure out why Kymco can pull so much more horsepower out of 25cc's.

I've yet to see the Downtown in person- are they being sold here already? I have looked for real people road tests and haven't found much...

I've moved the other direction. Selling the Burgman 400 and I've already replaced it with a BV 500.

I just don't care for the looks or seating position of the "modern" scoots and since the reason we bought a Burgman was for freeway & touring use (kept the Vespa & Buddy for in-town running around).

Kymco makes good scooters but the only model I'd consider is a People because of the styling. Though for me I'll stick to Italian stying (which the Buddy qualifies as even if it isn't actually Italian.

I thought that difference was amazing, too, until I found out Suzuki is now quoting curb weight (with fluids)
instead of dry weight like most others. Last year's Burgman was about 430 lbs. dry.

Hmm, motorcycle.com seems to like it:
http://www.motorcycle.com/manufacturer/bmw/motorcyclecom-best-of-2010-awards-89890.html

For my taste, scooters come in 2 flavours - Vespas and scoots that look nothing like Vespas (Tmax, SH150, Downtown etc).
It's the in-between ones that are trying to capture the look of Vespa but just not quite there that are a disappointment aesthetically IMO.

I'm curious about the DownTown 300i. Kymco has in the past been known for reliable machines that seem to be a bit down on power compared to others of similar size. Now they come out with a 300 that is right beside the 400 class machines in horsepower - but where is the torque? I've never seen a torque figure for the machine so I'm curious if they have sacrificed one or the other or are they true magicians who have squeezed big power out of a mid size motor? Personally I like the look but would take a bigger handful of torque over the horsepower.

Thanks Desmo... I hadn't seen that site. Some quick calculations:

Downtown 300:

6.79 kg per Nm
6.9 kg per Kw
peak Kw (horsepower) @ 8000 rpm and peak Nm (Torque) @ 6500 rpm

Vespa 300:

6.6 kg per Nm
9.42 kg per Kw
peak Kw @ 8500 rpm and peak Nm @ 5000 rpm

I won't speculate on how these two will perform against each other as these are only numbers. Interesting to look at but only a part of the whole story.

Your not wrong to look or be interested, and it really only matters what you think of the look of the scoot. As I was reading your post, I thought you were talking about the Genuine Stella, (Demolicious said: "The rumour mill suggests a new PX type scoot (manual twist shift gears) is meant to show up next year" )as the Stella is already out in limited number and is a 4 stroke shifter... But then you went into the Downtown. I wonder if it is actually a 295cc or like the vespa a meer 274cc...

I own 3 scoots myself, and the stable, in order of attainment were: 06/08 - Vespa LX150 (used with 364 miles on her and currently 11,58ish miles on her now.) 02/09 Vespa GTS250 (brand new taken out of the crate with around 7k on her now) and the latest 03/10 Honda Big Ruckus (about 2,500 on her now, but came with 1,612 when I finally found her)

You're right. There's lots of things that can affect the feel/performance of the bike - the weight of the rollers, programming of the ECU, how the clutch engages, behaviour of the variator etc etc

From the beginning I was unhappy about the lack of trip odometer, tachometer and outside air temperature gauges on the 300's. I really don't like the fact that those simple items are missing from my bike. On the other hand, I still love my 300 Super.

I don't see any problem with you looking at other makes of scooters. There are other interesting and lust worthy bike out there other than Piaggios.

Just listen to the rhythm of the traffic in the city, linger on the sidewalks where the neon signs are pretty.

If I can find one to test ride, I may be bringing one home. But then again, I already ride one of these funny sounding Kymco bikes.

I love the look and heritage of the Vespas but I like the larger wheel stability for the freeway riding I do.

I rode a Kymco once.

The front wheel fell off at 50mph.
I wasn't exactly lucky but I'm still alive.

I'll never sit on another one.
Never heard of this happening to a Vespa.

So the last guy who wrenched on it did not tighten the axle nut on the wheel.

Check out this thread:
Was I Just Unlucky

The front shock on the Vespa just falls off. Now I can make a blanket statement too, or I could realize that the fault was with the last person who worked on the bike...
