I was out riding today with my camera and something caught my eye. I had to stop to check it out to make sure that it was what I thought it was:



You say that's just a palm tree? Look again... the whole tree is artificial! It is in fact, a mobile phone antenna near where I live. I think they did a pretty good job on this one.

Nope we have one just like it in La Mirada.

Just google cell tower disguise. Pretty neat.

The palm tree looks way better the the "pine" trees they use around here.

I wonder if they disguise them as giant saguaro cacti in Phoenix?

I guess nothing in Texas is as tall as a cell tower, because ours just look like cell towers Do they ones that look like Paul Bunyan in Minnesota?

That's cool Whereas i can't remember seeing any cell towers (other than honking big dishes on the top of my mountain) i doubt they would take the time to disguise them over here This coming from a state that doesn't allow any billboards

So without billboards, there aren't any signs indicating gas stations up ahead?
This may seem odd, but while traveling thru Santa Barbara on 101, there
are no gas signs on the hyway. The first ime for me to drive up that way
for the Rides of March Rally I needed gas by the time I got to SB, what a
pain in the ass driving around looking for a gas station.

I look like Paul Bunyan (from lee on Solent-UK) and I'm not a Cell tower.

But i guess that's cos he's my Dad

We have a few here in Huntington Beach, on Magnolia between Yorktown and Garfield.

Sorry....not exclusive to San Diego....i see them all over the place. They can dress them up to look like other tree species too, depending on where you are.

I prefer the real deal.

Actually they are all over, no Cal lock on creativity. The canary island date palms are the coolest though! We have pine tree versions in the midwest!

Trees or antenna?

Both actually! That way I know a tree's a tree, and a big ugly antenna's a big ugly antenna.

Gee, and here I was expecting a picture!! We just have the old ugly usual ones unless they can install it in a church bell tower or something. Guess making them look like corn would be, um.....corny?

In Wyoming they have one that looks like a lightly larger than normal buffalo.

At least that tower is somewhat similar in size to the surrounding foliage....

... this tower is in Westchester, just outside NYC. They tried to make it look like a tree, but sticks out a wee bit...

LOL! Looks more like an out-of-place lodge pole pine!!! Too funny!

It's above a rest area on the Hutchinson River Parkway. You can see it for miles. When you first catch sight of it, about 10 miles away, you sort of say to yourself "look, a pine, I'm leaving the city and headed to the country..."

As you get closer you realize the "pines" just 'aint that tall in the "country"

That thing has got to cause some serious pine-envy!

size does matter.....

Those have been around for many years. When they first came out, they looked pretty bad, kind of like grandmas fake xmas tree. Now they are looking better and blend in pretty good if they are mixed in with the real deal.

They're called Mono-Palms. My fiancé designed the accounting software for the company that installs them. Little known and only slightly interesting facts. She points them all out to me when we drive.

Well, in most of Texas, a plain cell tower would actually be a landscape improvement. I hear people there put up fake ones in their back yard before selling their house.

Tons of pine tree cell towers in VT. Usually many feet taller than their neighboring trees, and look like hell. But, better than a shiny metal tower I suppose.

FROG trust me the shiny metal ones are hideous. Give me a disguised one any day. ERICH nope no signs but at least on Oahu your never more than 10-15 miles away from a gas station. Pretty much wherever there is a road (except freeways) you'll find a gas station.

I always think these ones look like the toilet brush bristle tree

No, THIS is the tree that looks like a toilet brush!!!

Our community actually considers this an attraction.... a stainless steel toilet bowl brush. Calls it the "Tree of 5 seasons. It doesn't even conceal a cell tower!
