Modern Vespa

Today, August 29th 2010, is a momentous day. On this day, all my registered bikes are running and in good working order. None of them are in immediate need of tires, oil, belts, or exhausts.

With a fresh exhaust gasket on the 300 Super, it joins the kitted GTS 250, the GT 200, the MP3 500, and the BMW R12R in the stable of working bikes. I can't remember the last time all the bikes were operable and not in need of anything in particular. I've always had something sitting broken or dangerously unridable sitting in the corner. Always.

Not today. A momentous day indeed.

Congrats, that has to be an amazing feeling! Now you are going to be afraid to ride anything for fear of it breaking! (Just kidding).

I think I have had 'to do' lists and unfinished projects sitting around since I was about 5 years old, with no end in sight...

(If it becomes unsettling, having all working bikes, you could always buy a vietbodge to keep in the corner of the shop to keep the "unworking quotient" up )

All mine are running as well and almost always have been , but then I only have the 3. And I probably do not ride anywhere near as much as you do.

Been there, done that. Quite literally. I had a vietbodge sitting on my back deck rusting for several years while I attempted to swap out the engine for a new one. It was very low on my priority list, though, and so it never got done. I'm glad that heap is gone...

I guess getting everything running is much like that now infamous phrase... "Herding cats"

That's what I did today! tried to get the maicoletta back on the road. Filled the tank and found it dripping all over the lift. Seems the tank had slid forward till it rubbed on the clamp for the air filter and punched a hole in the front of the tank.

Put the maico away and cleaned the workbench off. Then fixed something that didn't need fixing. Fitted a Malossi RS24 shock to the front of the GT.

Odd, all the guys I know with four or more bikes always seem to be single. I don't know what your status is, Jess, but I wonder if the trend continues and what the possible correlation could be..?

Happily married to a long-suffering woman who manages the registration and insurance on all the bikes in the family (including her three).

Well, it's certainly outside my pay grade. I can't braze worth a damn.

My route to the same means just involved selling projects until I was left with 4 running registered maintained bikes. It feels great. I also got engaged a while back, so maybe that's why I'm down to 4?! Interesting theory.

Odd that your momentous day coincides with the 5th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting the gulf coast? Perhaps if all your scooters had been running 5 years ago, the forces of order would have aligned more favorably for the rest of us?
This means that now, if one of your scoots should fail, the forces of entropy will triumph over order? Just think of the repercussions! If they fall out of alignment in 2012 along with the end of the long-count, you're responsible for the fall of civilization!

Now that you have posted about your momentous moment, you have doomed one of your steeds to a tragic day....

Glad to hear it Jess but it just pisses me off more that my one and only is still down waiting for parts.

More than one girlfriend will always require more maintenance than more than one scooter. In fact, good luck finding any time for a scooter when you have more than one girlfriend.

You do realise that to counter this and keep the universe in balance, there's now someone posting on a different forum about how this is the first day that not one of his five bikes is at all rideable and this is the first time it's ever happened to him...

I've got two and both run perfectly though the Piaggio needs headbearings again . I still ride it though. I'm trying my best to keep the usage equal between them to justify the need for two 8) . I've actually found another GREAT deal that I'm pondering. This is a very addictive hobby...

Just the silver ghost, which is in enough pieces (and registered as PNO) that it doesn't count.

Four out of four in tip-top shape here, too. Doesn't stop me from trying to fix something, though.

Congrats Jess! That's something I haven't been able to say since at least 1997, maybe even longer... and I'm sure it'll be a very long time until I'll be able to say again too. I do have 3 of 9 running now though, which is better I've been able to do for a while.

All five just fine here, ta very much. And the fifth one is *for* 'ma copine', so four is not any sort of limit.

I think there's an opportunity here to normalize the ratios. If a Heinkel changed hands then Bagel could move from 3:6 to 3:5 and Jess could move from 5:1 to 5:2.
