Hello all!

I have a 2005 Vespa GT200L which I bought last August with about 7000km on it. I have seen the oil light wink a few times and recently it came on for about a second twice in the space of about a minute. Bike has lots of oil but I decided to take it in to the local Vespa dealer who promptly ordered in a new oil temp sensor. Had it installed and still my oil light winked at me twice on yesterdays ride. ARG!!! Bike has about 14,000km on it now... Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks!

Did he replace the temp sensor, or the oil pressure switch? There is no oil temp sensor.

Well, there are two possibilities here:
1) Your dealer wrote down the wrong description, or
2) Your dealer crammed the wrong part into the hole.

My money is probably on 1. But if it's 1, it still begs the question: did he replace (a) the temperature sensor, or (b) the oil pressure switch?

Assuming it was 1b (which is the correct option here), then it's possible (though remotely so) that you have a genuine problem with oil pressure. If the light continues to wink, and if electrical faults can be ruled out, then that leaves a genuine (and potentially devastating) problem to deal with. Let's not jump to that conclusion yet, though. Take it back to the dealer, tell them the light is still winking, and ask them to clarify what they wrote down.

Ah, I actually noticed that Piaggio lists an " OIL TEMPERATURE SENSOR MASTER + LEADER" in the GT200 parts catalog, and I was wondering if there really was a temperature sensor.

Was just looking at that as well. Weird.

Which is actually the pressure sensor. So that is the correct part number.

Why oh why did Piaggio choose to call it a temperature sensor, when it clearly isn't?

No idea, whatsoever. Perhaps the translator had a hangover and got confused. They frequently get it wrong. That part number is the same for the oil pressure sensor in both the GTS and the Master engines.

I believe a short to earth will cause the light to come on. Does the light wink at idle? If so, then it is probably an oil pump problem.

I have only noticed it wink when I am coming to a stop..

I have a water pump seal on order and will be taking the bike back in to get that installed soon, so I will get them to re-visit the winky oil light issue then.

We don't have any big trips planned and I will keep an eye on it until it goes back in.

Will let ya know what happens...

Happy safe scooting all!

Winking when coming to a stop is almost always a case of not enough oil.

...or an oil that's too thin for whatever reason. Does this happen only when the engine is warmed up?

Perhaps you have not yet considered changing both the oil with the recommended weight, and the filter with an original model. I honestly don't know whether the oil pressure switch is upstream or downstream of the filter.

Is there an oil pressure regulator valve in that engine? If so, I hope it can be accessed without splitting the crankcase.

Cheers and good luck,
Bob
