Hello,

I recently inherited a Derbi Boulevard 150, which I have learned uses many of the same engine parts (including ignition) as the Vespa LX150. The Derbi is lacking keys of any kind, however.

Hence I'm in the market for a legit CDI and keys to swap on the Derbi. Does anyone have advice for the most affordable place to get them? I've found this one new ($290), and this one ($80) on eBay. Any recommendations?

Cheers,
Chris

Chris,

Welcome aboard MV. No disrespect however a first post looking for keys is going to draw a little criticism, stand by for that. Got any pictures of your scoot, location and such? Fill up your profile and put up a avatar for starters.

Have you tried your local Vespa dealer?

Parts like these should not be purchased used as they may not work correctly. They need to be a matched pair and programed to work correctly for the bike you intend to use them in. This is a security feature of the bike and done to make starting a stolen bike difficult.

I don't have any pictures of my (currently non-functional) scooter. Not trying to be a leech here, just frankly asking for a little help.

I've got the local dealership looking for me, but the tone of this voice wasn't promising. Will all dealerships have the same availability and price, or should I call a few to compare? I know that the CDI and keys must be paired, but if the eBay seller will guarantee it (and eBay does already), wouldn't it be worth a try to save $200?

i'd expect all dealerships to sell the CDI and keyset for the same price, as they have to be ordered from the manufacturer.

used CDIs typically come of out salvaged bikes - ask the seller if you're unsure. there's no reason not to buy one if the seller has a good reputation, and if you're confident you'll be able to get your money back if it doesn't work or turns out to be defective, etc.

He mentions in the listing that this one is in fact salvaged, so I may go for it. Thanks for the info re: dealerships!

Never implied you were being a leech, was just pointing out the obvious after being on MV for some time now. Hey nice avatar!! I certainly agree a used cdi could be a potential backfire for you, our shop may have what you need in stock also. Anyway, a Derbi is a sweet scoot, welcome aboard!

Thanks - please PM if you have a CDI/keys/tumbler set for anything less than $290 shipped.

You got it. We are closed today, will check stock in the morning. Pricing will always be less than you think as we are an MV sponsor and you are an MV member now!

Cheers,

We do however it varies depending on the margin of what you need. It also varies in the respect that if we got a super good deal from somewhere (like the Vespa of Oceanside liquidation auction) we pass on even more savings.

We strive to make a win/win transaction every single time whether its a scooter or an emblem.

Best,
SDG

Hey SDG i posted recently about a similar problem.
Do dealers usually carry these pars or would i be better off looking elsewhere?

Dealers will probably order them in unless they've sold more than about 50 of any models that use them. After that it's worth their while having parts in stock even if just for quick diagnosis of problems.

We usually carry these type of parts, I can't speak for other dealers.

Note that you're not getting the master key with the used ebay one. Maybe not such a good deal.

Ouch. Good point. The blue keys are non-replicable, right?

Can't program any other keys to the ecu without it. Would be fine until you lost that one key.

Thanks for the heads-up. Confirmed it's the brown one, so extra blues should be programmable...

If you need Derbi specific parts here's a source: http://www.sfmoto.com/

They were a Derbi dealer and know the bikes. According to their parts guy a lot of the stuff is still in the US in the Piaggio warehouse.
