well got the variator off for et2 belt change (polini vari), but when i pulled it off, two ultra thin washers came off with it, and i cant remember if they were inside the variator, where the two pieces connect, or against on the outside of the variator as it mates towards the case
any clue

not exactly sure for your model, but for a GTS, there is a thin washer between the variator halves, it fits in the indentation on the back of the variator where it would contact the sintered bushing (some call it a gudgeon pin) the other thin one goes between the cup washer and the outer variator half.

from the outside towards the inside:
nut> cup washer> washer> outer variator> washer> bushing
