Ear plugs
Definitely YES. I recently completed a 2100 mile road trip and without earplugs this would not have been possible. I now have a little container on my key chain to put them in so I won't forget them!

Huh, what?!?
It's a bit late for me, but I wear earplugs every ride in order to preserve what remains of my hearing. |

Plug 1
I've been wearing them for the past 8 years after realising just how much of my hearing I've lost and I wear them all the time regardless of the distance or traffic conditions.
I was just very interested in how many others were using them. I didn't really want why's or wherefores, I just wanted numbers. Personally I'd never use an Ipod while riding because it takes away one of your vital senses. Back to the yes and no's. Bill X |

95% of the time yes (for any ride that's longer than 5 minutes)
I wear: http://earplugstore.stores.yahoo.net/almonasomoea.html with the Yellow filter inserted. |

Was on a group ride last weekend and one of the guys forgot his plugs. He was pretty miserable and mentioned when we stopped that his ears were ringing. I was glad I had a spare pair to give him. We can all carry a package of cheapie foam plugs in medium and small in our pet carriers in case we carry a passenger or have a friend in need! It's up to each rider to decide whether to wear plugs - for me, it's a no-brainer! With my fly screen the air hits my helmet and it is LOUD!!

Addition
Whenever there is background noise I find myself craning my head forward so that I can hear more so I know I've lost more than enough already.
Pardon ? Bill X |

Yes, but only when I am driving above 40mph on a trip - the buffeting is quite loud due to the windscreen height at that speed. No for regular commute.
