So, I have a 2007 GTS 250ie.

I'm taking it into the shop, and have a time scheduled, but it's a couple weeks out.

So, I'm curious if this is bad to ride (in the meantime) while m scooter is making this sound...

It doesn't make this sound until it's been oing for about 10 or 15 minutes, and is at riding temperature.

It's hard to describe. It's a harsh sound. Lower pitched than the normal engine sound; almost a grinding, grrrrr, type sound. But it's doesn't sound as if anything is grinding. It only make this sound when accelerating from a stop. If I easy into the acceleration really slow, it doesn't really do it. If I gas it from the stop, it does it. If I accelerate, and it starts to make then sound, then backed off the gas, coast for a minute and get back on the gas it stops when backing off, and doesn't make it when getting back on.

The sound is almost like it's flooding. It seems to lose a some of the power until it kicks into the next gear (automatic). Almost like is you were to let the clutch out on a car without gas and it does the shake-going-to-stall type sound.

So, I'm sure this is sufficiently ambiguous, but doesn't anyone have any idea? I described to the Vespa guy on the phone and he thought it may be a battery issue where it's not getting enough power?

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Kyle

Sounds like clutch grind. Very common, easy to remedy.
many many posts on the subject but if you are going in for service you may want them to clean out the CVT and lightly abrade the clutch bell.

Check the Wiki
FAQ: Shudder, graunching noise on take-off? Sealion?

Good luck.

Sealion!! That's the sound for sure. Let me look into this.

Thanks for the reply.

Any idea what the repair cost for such a thing would be?

it is a fairly simple service item. You can actually do it yourself with a modicum of mechanical skill and some tools. The only risky bit is loosening the variator nut without cracking the CVT housing. Some on here improvise, others have made tools and some have bought the right tool for the job.
40 mins start to finish for a first timer and there are photos and video on the Wiki.

Boulty,

I'm reading in the other thread that I just remove the chrome cover, spray Brakleen through the holes, cover it up and go?

I'm not reading anything about "loosening a variator nut?"

No?

Pry it off with a flat tip craftsman or Snap-On screwdriver.

Clean the air intake filter for the transmission - 2 screws, piece of black plastic, clogged piece of foam filter. Then remove the chrome cover and blast compressed air through the holes.

People never clean this filter and it cloggs up with debris very fast -
