First, a little background:

Way back in 2005, when the PX was no longer going to be sent to the states, a gentleman from south Florida called Moto Bravo in Atlanta to see if he can order a container load of PX's in the three colors and have them drop shipped to his warehouse.

The owner of Moto Bravo laughed and said he will have to send it up the line to Piaggio. He calls Piaggio and tells of this weirdo in south Florida that wants to buy a container load of PX 150's and have it drop shipped to his warehouse. Piaggio snickered and said "Tell him we will do it if he buys TWO container loads."

So the call goes back to Florida with the new deal, and it is accepted. Since his passing in May, the family is now selling the 90+ bikes in Silver, Black, and Red. These are still in the same crates they left Italy in.

How cool is that? Anybody want a brand new Vespa PX150? Four? Ten?

I assume we're talking Scooter superstores, right? Story seems to fit.

Here's a link to the Norcross georgia store showing the PX150-
http://www.vespaatlanta.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=46&Itemid=57

I was there about a month ago and they had several new PXs sitting on the floor and I've seen ads on Craiglist from them as well. They had a bunch of stellas on the floor as well.

There were three stores in the Atlanta area, and one of them closed a few weeks ago. Not sure what the status is of Vespa midtown. I hope they're safe. Apparently Scooter Superstores is having serious financial issues. And the owner passed away this spring. Sad thing.

Sorry guys, I didn't have any signal on the crackberry.

they have actually been entered into the inventory of Scooter Superstore and can be ordered at any of the locations in Georgia and Florida. Kevin at the Hollywood Florida store can assist with any shipping arrangements. They are $4000 each. We do have a few of them at the Georgia stores if you want to buy there, and will have more come up from Florida as those are depleted.

Make a long story short - Yes the Owner passed away in May, and he left a lot of stuff undone because he loved to Micro Manage everything himself. Some stores weren't doing so great (like Fairburn) in sales and others were simply too close to larger stores that they were unknowingly competing with each other (Jax beach).

The only financial trouble we are having is the long processes involved in the probate courts to sort out the owner's estate. Once that is complete, everything will work out and scooter superstore will be stronger, if not as widespread as we started to become.

You have no idea how close he was to getting those. Apparently Italy has a few hundred of them sitting around (because the model to have over in Europe is the 125 thanks to those licensing laws) and he was actually working on getting a container (or two)

I am pretty sure they just need over 5000 miles first to allow them to be registered. Someone correct me if I am wrong.

You have to get 7,500 miles on the odo before you can register a scooter in California? I am curious, how do you do that legally? Do you technically break the law until you get to 7,500?

Before you can register a NON CARB (Ca. Air Resources Board) compliant vehicle in the Golden State. ( CARB is our state's own EPA, and it's quite an agency....other states actually adopt CARB's super stringent standards )

The rationale behind the 7500 mile benchmark is specifically to eliminate out of state purchases of "dirty" vehicles, then brought into the state in an attempt to cheat the system.

By making those type vehicles meet a 7500 mile minimum it "demonstrates" a longer-term, legitimate ownership out of state, prior to being brought in as a result of a legitimate relocation here.

The 7500 miles must be from the time the title is in your name. So you can't buy it, ride it until it passes 7500 miles, then register it in CA. They check to see the mileage when you bought it.
So all these new PX150s in Florida? Just get a used 2005 PX with low miles that always pop up on the market. Same thing, but cheaper.
And I'm pretty sure these 'new' bikes do not have any warranty - or am I mistaken?

This regulation only applies to specific vehicles that are not compliant with EPA regulations, such as two-stroke scooters. The old Stellas, the PX, some of the Euro 50cc's are not registerable in CA without the 7500 odometer reading. Most of the modern scooters and motorcycles we ride (Vepsa, Honda, Yamaha, Kymco, etc) are certified and sold in California as new scooters with no odometer minimums.

Paige is correct. Basically every new scooter is manufactured with its emissions systems defaulted to the highest level of regulation (California) because there is really no way of knowing where the bike may go once it hits the states. It's just easier that way

Actually no. For a bike/car/truck etc to be registered in CA it must have at least 7500 miles on it if it is from out of state UNLESS it has the sticker verifying that it meets CA emissions standards.

There are too many unknown variables to figure it out accurately at this point, unless someone has the actual outside wheel diameter and the gear ratio of the interface of the wheel to the speedometer cable. What we really need is the gear ratio inside the odometer, or number of speedometer cable revolutions per mile for the odometer, then we could have the monkeys figure it out pretty quick.

But with some gross basic assumptions, we can get an idea and correct the numbers when we get more accurate details later. For instance, a 10 inch wheel with a 2 inch thick tire makes for a 14 inch tall tire, or a circle with a 7 inch radius. That makes a 43.96 inch circumfrence, which we'll round up to 44. One mile has 63,360 inches, so 8,000 miles (rounded down to keep it simple but still "legal") has 5.07x10^008 inches, which divided by 44 (the wheel diameter) gives us 11,522,727 revolutions of the wheel. IF (and this is the grossest assumption) the ratio coming off the wheel hub is 1:1, then it will take the same 11,522,727 revolutions to rack up the 8,000 miles on the odo. With the 8,000 rpm drill, that is 1440 minutes, or roughly 24 hours, or 3 monkey days. The actual ratio at the hub will determine the actual number of days, and the 2:1 multiplier box will cut the required number of monkeys in half, though not literally.

But I could be wrong. I am a word guy, not a number guy.
