Not a good metaphor. It's a myth that people in the middle ages thought the earth was flat.

Computer went down at lawn mower shop. Said I'd have to wait to pick up. I asked why I couldn't write a check. "..what he's trying to tell you is we can't because there's no way to calculate sales tax." WTF!

Same shop that works by the hour but wouldn't change my scoot tire because, "it would take twice as long as a Yamaha."

TOM people nowadays can't do anything without a calculator. We had a young kid as our waitress in a diner back home who couldn't figure out how much change to give back to us. The register added the things up and gave her a total but then she had to do some MATH. Facepalm emoticon Very scarey.

Don't put all the lack of skills on the young 'uns.

I stood for 10 minutes at a Pep Boys while the older-than-me clerk hammered away at a computer he barely understood how to operate, almost slapping at the keys with the palms of his hands, misreading the results and even screwing up the point-and-click selections..over and over. I could barely restrain myself from pulling his hands away (I could see the screen from where I stood) and doing it myself. Eventually I had to tell him "never mind" and get out of there.

How long have we had ATM machines? Point of sale card readers?
10 minutes searching through the purse for the card...tap, tap, tap.
"What do I do now? Where does the card go? I have to do what? What's it asking me now? What's a PIN number?" It's asking me if I want cash back...Do I?"

It's a lot more common than people who can't make change.

OK..my pissy listy of the moment:

Waiting in long lines behind people who indiscriminately toss items in their shopping cart, wait for the total, and then ask the clerk to remove items one by one until the sum gets close to what they had to spend. Crying or Very sad emoticon

I used to play jokes on cashiers in my much younger days. I would roll up to the checkout with a cart full of groceries and start loading up the belt. I would wait until the cashier had rung up 15 or 20 items and then say "Give me a subtotal and let me know when it gets near $6.00. That's all I've got." The looks I got varied from anger to amazement to panic.

I decided to leave Cape Cod early and was making record time until I got to exit 2 about 2 miles from the canal bridge when traffic stopped. 2 hours later I cleared the bridge. Massdot had reduced the lanes to one in each direction for bridge work. Except there was no bridge work just a lot of empty trucks and a Porta Potty taking up the right lane. My normal trip time is 2 hours but it was closer to 4.5 hours today.

Of course, when I was growing up Sales tax was 4%. I could calculate that in my sleep. My local sales tax now is 6.1375 or something, depending on which side of the street I'm on.

Sidenote: Doesn't that tell you something about taxes since I was younger? >50% higher on a percentage basis.

That's because we were Math majors, not Arithmetic majors.

(True story; I know the Pythagorean theorem. I've known the Pythagorean theorem since grade school, almost. But it took a tile setter to show me that it had some value outside of geometry class.)

If you really want to learn applied mathematics, talk to a roofing framer.

The thing that really got me was when I did some laundry in Germany the shirts where nearly white again after 2 washes!

Possibly -- only speculation on my part -- their laundry detergents contain phosphates, which are highly effective for cleaning, but which have long been known to be a very significant contributor to water pollution. They have been largely eliminated from US household detergents.

Paying registration on my GT today. I despise the idea of paying a tax on a vehicle that I own. Especially when I go ride I have to watch out in almost every section of road for some defect in the road surface that will gladly endanger my life If I don't avoid it.

I'll look into that, but I doubt Germans would allow a water pollutant to be in widespread use. But then maybe their water treatment plants are setup to clean it...

That reminds me of another reason to be PO'd. Why should I have to continue to pay thousands of dollars for annual real estate tax on a house that I've owned outright for over 20 years.
