Modern Vespa

Some one has chopped down the "shoe tree" on highway 50 in Nevada, "the lonest highway in America". This tree is in the middle of nowhere. Big Red and I stopped to visit on our cross America trip in July. May have not even made your newspaper, but it was reported around the world.
Some people are just mean!

That's not mean, that's being a big frickin asshole. Hope they get what's coming to them Hopefully a tree will fall on their car, I hope they are in it at the time.

That's a shame. I stopped there the last time I traveled across 50. I wanted to toss some shoes into the tree but didn't have any I wanted to part with.

I used to visit a shoe tree near Niagara Falls on the Canadian side. If it still lives perhaps we could grab some seeds & raise another shoe tree in the poor thing's place

Have seen the shoe tree and thought it was weird and cool all in one.....sad what people will do.

There's also a shoe tree in eastern OR, I think near Burns someplace.

Why would anyone do that?

Shoe Tree, took these on a scooter trip on my way home form the Dakotas.

Ahhh, the shoe tree! Many years ago, I and 4 other riders pulled in to see the shoe tree. A woman with a bunch of young kids were outside their van having a snack break. As we pulled in, she screamed at the kids to get into the van, and they were gone in 15 seconds flat! I didn't think we were that scary!

If anyone lives near there you should go to the memorial and video tape it because i bet there going to be there. Karma better come soon. Good karma would take a saw and cut in half what ever they drive or ride.

Yes, a very sad sight for us locals. Hopefully the jerks responsible will be caught and a few choice parts can be cut off if them...Will take some Picts at the memorial and will post.

Some people are pure jag-offs. The fact that someone is such a dick to cut down something so cool, something that just brings a little bit of cool to society is shocking. If they find out who it is they should flog them bad since the only reason for doing this was to be a dick. It's time to treat assholes like assholes.

Anybody who has personnal pictures of this tree or stories of having visited this tree, please post them.

And why would anyone put shoes in the tree to begin with??

Perhaps all the shoes killed the tree and the local authorities had to remove it???

Nah, it was a big ol' healthy cottonwood.

As for why, the OP linked to an article that read:

This road is the epitome of 'middle of nowhere', which is part of what made this tree so cool. You drive for miles and miles through stark, open country and then come across this.
