true be said ..... I get trashed talked everyday about my scoot... from my co-workers ever since I bought one. My close friends also but it has stopped since some of them bought one. I get three type of persons trying to put down scooters... one is the regular loud mouth that messes with everybody which I don't care for ...... second are the mother father type that want you in a cage for protection reasons ... vast majority are in that mother-father gruop BTW.... and third the never experienced or never cared to but are willing to laugh, and talk about scooters like that know it. The two first there is nothing to do but just listen (in my case is what I do) but the third is a more difficult to handle specially in meetings, lunch room and water hole gathering. The gas part is definitly a plus now but I never ever mention it because it's a no brainer.... all I say is that it is FUN .... nothing more .... like being in the pool is fun even if you don't have the best body you will have fun .... I ride EVERYDAY and its just fun for me. Driving a car is too..If the road is wide open(or in grand turismo for the PS3) but not really everyday... riding a HD is fun too .... but not all the time ... like people say "it's fun to party there but it not to live there everyday" .... I hear them talking on which is the best way to get to work in their cars ... funny I take different routes all the time and if it longer great .... if not .... so what.... of course that was not always my thought process. ROCK ON!

It's fascinating to see how different locations have such entirely different cultures regarding scooters. No one has ever made fun of me for riding a scooter in eight years of riding, and in fact people are very interested and think they are cool. At the same time, there are people who get laughted at every day.

I'm assuming it comes down to regional differences (scooters are quite common where I live), but if not, the only thing I can recommend is getting new friends, family, co-workers, etc.

Well I guess a get in your face attitude on a 250lb guy must make all the difference. For those who get "teased" are there other things you get poked about? Seems to me like there probably are and you're just being a wimp. After all it's just some ignoramus spewing idiotic opinions. Fuck em (if their cute)

I get quite a bit of flack and jokes from my fellow co-workers, but its part of the job as being a firefighter to give each other a hard time(not sure why, but I'm not into this tradition, Im a lover, not a fighter). To deal with it I've pretty much given up caring about it and just respond with the truth, saying I love riding my scooter and the enjoyment helps me care less about what you think about it. IMHO they're jealous and/or scared of it

My neighbor came over to my garage the other day and my scooter was sitting there beside my Corvette.

He asked "Why do you have a scooter, did you lose your license?"

I told him (quite honestly), "Because I like to go fast and blow people off the line."

This totally surprised him and shut him up for a moment.

Not defeated, he then asked, "Well how many women have you picked up on it?" He smiled devilishly, knowing he would get an embarrassed reply.

But I told him, "More than you have in your pickup truck."

"Well I"m married", he explained.

So I asked, "Then why do you want to know for?"

Finally that shut him up.

I was getting gas this morning when a fellow patron road up on his rather large motorcycle and said, "can I ask you a question?"

"Sure," I said.

"Where did you get your jacket?"

I was wearing my Corazzo Postale. Which I told him. He thanked me and drove off. So that's the kind of city San Francisco is: The motorcyclists ask the scooterists about fashion.

I haven't gotten laughed at. At least not to my face.
I did get asked why I didn't "just buy a motorcycle" after I explained to someone that my scooter is a 250 and will do 80 if I want it to so it's not just a little around the city toy. I didn't want a motorcycle.
That's what I find most, is that people just don't know about scooters. The majority seem to think that they're all 49cc. or less. Nothing wrong with them, but people just don't seem to know that "scooter" does not necessarily mean 49cc/35-40 MPH max.

I'll educate them if they're interested, but mostly just via my own enthusiasm.

Honestly, I'm always getting compliments about it! - Car parks, family oh and the fuel station is probably the most common place I get compliments even the staff when I pay ask how much they are e.t.c. e.t.c.

...And yeah of course you're gonna get the chavs in their 1999 Vauxhall Corsa with an exhaust the size of the channel tunnel laughing and pointing. But then I think, hang on a minute, look at the state of you and your stupid car and choice of clothing... I just simply laugh back at them whilst also pointing (If I'm sat at a red light at the time obviously).

Reactions to my scooter range from neutral to highly positive. I've never had a negative one from friends, relatives, colleagues, dates (they want to go out on the Vespa - who am I to disappoint?).

I think it's because (like London and some other cities) a scoot makes more sense for living, working and socialising in inner Sydney than anyother vehicle. A lot of very inner-city people don't own private cars anymore. Scooters - Vespas in particular - have a real cachet in the chic inner city spots (Paddington, Darlinghurst, Surry Hills, Glebe, Balmain).

Bikers? Yeah, they laugh - but my riding mates have always laughed at me, so the scooter makes no difference ...

... and there are some funny reactions too. Last Sunday I stopped in at a Maccas / Micky D's to do the sale of a spare motorbike seat - and got totally parked in by a large raod-rider bike group (all kinds of bikes). A couple of guys just lifted my scoot (helping me) to get it out, and gave me a friendly bit of stick along with "cute scoot" and "where'd you get that jacket?" (Corazzo Postale) .. all very friendly and I didn't even feel the need to mention I had a road bike.

This is an excellent riposte. Good on ya.

The only people that tease me are the douches that don't ride or don't ride often. This is much less common, however, than the plentiful folks who want to know all about the scoot because they've "always wanted one." I live and ride in the city, though, so it's a pretty sensible means of transportation and people are curious about it.

I think I sold a coworker on getting a Vespa the other day, in fact. That moment came when I told her that I am always in a great mood when I ride to work. It really sets a positive tone to the day (well, night - for me), and I always have that joyful ride home again waiting for me in the morning. I think she really liked the idea of that. 8)

Mostly a non-issue.
But when some twirp on a crotch rocket wearing cutoffs, t-shirt, and sneakers does a roaring swerve I smile and think to myself, "I upped my safety. I upped my mileage. So up yours!"
Always helps...

Since reading this thread I've begun A Great Social Experiment, in which I initate "the wave" (left hand extended downward towards the pavement at 45 degrees) to bikers of all shapes and sizes - crotch rockets, Harleys, etc.

Results so far: the vast majority wave back.

I really think it's the NON-bikers that have the problem, not members of the extended two-wheeled family.
