i love my local gym - great facilities for £40 a month, and right around the corner from my house. However, some of their front of house staff definitely fall into the 'nice but dim' category. I had the following exchange with a manager this evening, after being told that I could no longer use my fast access swipe card to get in for my yoga class - all members now have to queue at the cashier and collect a paper bracelet as well:
me: I've just collected my receipt from the machine - why do i need to join a queue and get a bracelet as well? [the queues are often quite long in the evening]
manager: people were turning up at the class when they hadn't booked, we need to give you something that shows that you've booked.
me: but i've got a receipt with the class time and my name on it.
manager: you need a bracelet as well.
me: why?
manager: to prove that you've booked for the class.
me: but ... hang on ... this receipt has the name of the class, the time of the class, and my name on it - that's pretty good proof that i've booked, no?
manager: the instructor needs to collect the bracelets to show that everyone's paid.
me: so why can't i give him my receipt?
manager: because some of the instructors weren't collecting the receipts.
me: they were collecting bracelets but not receipts?
manager: they weren't collecting anything. people were getting into classes without booking.
me: i understand that's a problem, but surely the instructor can collect either a bracelet or a receipt? either one is proof that i've booked the class. I don't understand why i need to have both.
why make people queue when they don't need to?
manager: because the instructors weren't collecting the receipts
me: [non-sequitur alert] can't you ask them to collect bracelets
and receipts? and if they're not collecting anything at all, then what difference does it make if I have a bracelet?
manager: you need to show proof that you've booked for the class.
me: .... um... okay.

you know what, i'd love to stay and chat, but I'm actually late for class now. [swipes card and dashes through turnstile]
