Morning all!

Item 1: I was slow to connect 'Obama visits Houses of Parliament this morning' with the incredibly slow traffic around Westminster. I filtered up Whitehall to Trafalgar Square, where a police biker was holding up the traffic, and after a few minutes a procession of cars containing scary dudes in black suits and shades came by followed by a long black car with dark windows and a US flag on the bonnet. So Jim's X9 passed within a few metres of The Most Powerful Man On Earth.

Item 2: My GT is fixed! But I have no idea when I'm going to manage to collect it. I will be in France this weekend but in an entirely different part to where my bike is; next weekend I'm seeing old friends and I'd really rather not rearrange it; and I don't want to waste my precious Annual Leave on this. The lady from the breakdown company was eager to get me out there ASAP before the garage starts charging for storage. *thinks thinks*

Item 1: They seem to be handling this rather better than the Bush visit a few years ago which was all helicopter gunships and seriously aggressive not very secret security men. The Obamas are a classy act for sure. Westminster in a bit of a swoon, I think.

Also many laffs at the cringe inducing high five after the ping pong yesterday. I do love UK/US photo ops, they always provide a giggle.

Here's something for Genie to go with the spanner necklace. A friend found this and declared it 'the nastiest thing on the internet' (I don't think it's too bad, myself):

Saw a quick blurb on the news this morning that the POTUS breached some protocol when offering a toast to the Queen. They didn't explain what the breach was but just showed the awkward moment when Obama raised his glass and the Queen just looked at him. Anyone know what he did wrong? Felt kinda bad for him.

Pass the port
Spoke over the national anthem I think.

Really, these things only exist to embarrass people. It's like a bloodsport where the person who makes the most mistakes at dinner has to dance for coins at the end.

Yes it can be funny but mostly only the upper class English find it so. There's a correct way to dispatch a bread roll in such dinners for instance but I am sure that 99 per cent of the population don't give a damn.

When I first moved to London I lived at a rather posh hall of residence run by a Society of which the Queen was a patron. I was one of a group of residents selected to meet her when she visited. In addition to being thoroughly vetted by her security service, we had to memorize a very long list of protocols and attend curtseying classes - apparently it's a big deal if you get the height, angle of the head dip, or hand position wrong.

My curtsey and my background passed muster and I was presented to the Queen. We had a little chat about my artwork and I actually made her laugh. She's rather powdery in person and her 'minders' are deeply intimidating, with the subtle-but-deadly demeanor of someone who could snap your neck with two fingers

Secretly she would probably love a hug from you Judy.

Curtsying classes??? Well those skills could come in handy. Would love to see a proper curtsy that passes Queen muster.

Just heard two takes on this. First one a commentator blamed the orchestra for starting the anthem before the president was finished with his toast to the Queen. The second one said it was the president's fault because the toast to the Queen is supposed to be brief and he was going on too long.

In my deep distant past, I had to guide the Queen around (somewhere unmentionable), pour her tea and ask if she wanted milk or lemon. (Lemon). I'm sure she thought I was one of the waiters, although she probably did wonder why a waiter would be wearing a kilt and holding out a hand to shake hers. Oh well. (She really is very tiny and that was almost thirty years ago....)

Le Weekend
Alice I'm free the weekend of the 4th and 5th of June if you need a lift.

I have no Queen related anecdotes to share except I've seen her twice......in my sights.

It seems that I'm going to see TT3D Closer to the Edge a 3rd time at the weekend.

Joy.

Ardy and I did tea at Cambridge with Prince Phillip. Was actually a rather relaxed affair, and we found him to be quite the conversationalist. Of course, we were all vetted, and a brief bio was sent to Buckingham Palace for his use. Was amazed how he was able to use bits and pieces of each person's bio during the introductions to stimulate conversation - all from memory.

I have a lovely anecdote about Phillip. He is renowned for going off the proscribed route. One of the boys at the local school he was visiting (Edinburgh Academy) had put on the wrong one and turned up in a blue shirt and not a white one. The staff hid him somewhere unseen. Of course Phillip wandered off, noticed the boy and said something like: "I take it your mother doesn't use Persil then"... always the wit.

And then there's the Queen Mother one. She had a penchant for hiring gay staff. Or maybe gay staff had a penchant for applying for service jobs. Apparently one morning, two of her staff were having a bit of a ding dong in the kitchen and she appeared and said: "Would you two old queens cut it out, because this Old Queen would like her breakfast." Or so the story goes.

I don't know what an official kok is to be honest. You ride with us, you are. You were the first time you rode with us. The nice thing about the Donk is that it is the Club that isn't. ie it's virtual. Unless someone has changed the original ethos, which wouldn't surprise me. You do have a sticker don't you? When we were given our brief protocol lesson for tea with him, we were told that he could be quite "extemporaneous" in many ways, to include ditching his minders. Since we were in a walled garden, we noticed that they were on the periphery, and, as the principal (Dean for you Yanks) later put it, seemed more attuned to his not slipping out unnoticed than keeping outsiders from getting in.

I did have a long chat about things military with him, especially naval history, as he noted from my bio that I was a Naval (not Army) War College grad. To quote the good man, "Well, Colonel, that is just another redeeming quality you can claim."

dammit. i was hoping to keep it secret but it looks like i've been outed. yes, i've been running a cottage industry from my kitchen, making brassieres out of old panty girdles.

seriously tho ... apart from the fact that it is fugleh and looks like something you'd wear whilst recovering from a sporting injury, it is the sort of undergarment i favour - i hate underwires, lace, bows, unnecessary decor, or padding of any kind in a brassiere. not sure i'd want to lend my name to anything quite this horrible, however Bleh emoticon

Oh hey, I phoned the breakdown people back and the woman I got this time was super-nice. She put me on hold while she rang the French garage, who are NOT going to charge a storage fee, and I can work out when/how I want to pick it up and get back to them when I'm ready.

I think it will be a flight from Stansted to Poitiers because that cuts out a day's driving. Do helmets fit in hand luggage?

Is it me or does the model have a back problem or has she just been distracted by a shelf she forgot to dust.

That's not the most unpleasant undergarment I've ever seen but it's pretty goddam close.
How could they name such a naff piece of underwear after such a nice moniker ?

I tried to outrun a shower after work this evening while it thundered and flashed behind me.
The plan was to leave the mountain bike at work then run home this evening but I'm pretty certain I would have been soaked by the time I got back.
Great fun trying to beat the elephants before the heavens opened if you like metaphors.

Speaking of showers, took the MX-5, top down, to pick up a couple of cases of wine (we have a rally here next week, you know) and of course that brought unforecast drizzle. Got the top back up after the first three drops hit the windscreen.

You have a Rally next week Al ? News to me !

Actually I'd love to be joining you and the rest of the crue but it's J and K that I'm really jealous of for having the chance to actually ride there.
Wouldn't it be ironic if by the time they got there they were sick of riding ?
Fat chance.

Glad the Miata is working out for the good.

Bottom of page 2? WTF?

And sick of riding? No chance. Razz emoticon K has even admitted that US freeways will never, ever, be in the slightest bit intimidating after the Ligurian coast Autostrada. And after filtering in rush-hour in Firenze - nuff said.

Now on the ferry en route to Patras. Somehow we got upgraded from an inside suite to an outside one. We must be on our way home, as it's on the starboard side.

So today Genie and I both ran 10 miles but in the opposite direction by one cycling while the other ran and when we reached our destination swapped for the return.
I had it a little easier by having the wind behind me but we both finished the distance around the 1 hour 40 mark which wasn't bad going.
Poor Genie had to contend with the headwind for the return journey which caused a few expletives to escape but each time I had to stop she still managed to vanish into the distance.
Our route took us along the canal side from Hackney to Enfield which is getting prettier each time we travel it. Well apart from the Industrial Estate which is pretty awful and the "Travellers Site" which for some reason we seem to increase our speed as we run by. That and the Tower Blocks of Death which aren't pretty no matter how many pastel colours you paint them.
Today the ducks and geese were showing of their young making us go awww and ohhh at all the right moments.
We did spot a Kayak rental shop close to a lock about half way along so that could be worth a go one Sunday ?
The Bill sense of humour was well and truly blanked by a rather stocky lady who had a cup of tea on the go on the opposite side of the canal.
As we ran by I shouted " two sugars!" but it was greeted with a scowl that could have curdled milk.
Apart from that a lovely day by the riverside. It's the simple things.
