On my way to work this morning, there was a report of a recent survey which compared MAC users to PC users. In general, MAC users have more fun then PC users and PC users were more likely to ride a Harley then a
Vespa. MAC's drive me crazy, I have a lot of fun and drive a Vespa. So the survey proves one thing... survey people have too much time on their hands! Who dreams this stuff up?

We're a Mac family.

Wife has a suped up top end Mac desktop maxed out with everything possible to add to it. Seriously, the thing has the computing power of a Cray (she's a graphic designer but I suspect she's also a closet gamer grrl).

Older son and daughter (15 and 17 respectively) both have Mac Minis

I have a Mabook Pro and an ipad.

Youngest son (7) is about to inherit my ipad when I get the new model.

That's not counting the various ipods, touches, nanos, etc. around the house.

I worked for IBM prior to the existence of the PC, and for many years after. Obviously, I was well indoctrinated in PCs. The subsequent companies I worked for were also PC centric.

When I retired, I bought my first Mac. Several Macs later, I have never regretted making the change.

Me? I am the guy full of bikes, some in boxes on the shelf.

I have Windows, iPad, android on the phone, and of course a BSD fileserver and Linux Virtual Machine.

Oh, and I work on Solaris and AIX.

I did work in a well-known fast-food chain as a spotty teenager, yes. Building a Mac is pretty tricky if you've got to make half-a-dozen simultaneously within 30 seconds while some underqualified 'manager' is yelling at you for doing it wrong and too slowly.

Feck 'em though...as long as you can shut the box, you can sell it with fries

My main computer is my laptop running Ubuntu, but have some machines for work under my desk running CentOs and Red Hat Linux, and a Windows Vista machine for games and Windows-only utilities.

I have nothing against Macs, just have not found a good reason to pay the extra $ on one yet.

Well, the discussion has turned to "my first computer." My first was hand built by me from a Motorola 6800, with my own "os" bit switched in. I soon moved to an Intel 8080, and designed and programmed my own kernel to load CP/M. I still have my 8" floppy of Microsoft Fortran to run under CP/M, prior to their first DOS release.

edit: Forgot to mention it was my own floppy controller. None were available for 8 bit computers at the time.

It should! From the wikipedia entry on the Ubuntu OS: It is named after the Southern African philosophy of Ubuntu ("humanity towards others")

My first computer was an 8MHz PC clone (an ARC X-turbo!) with dual 5.25" floppies and 4 color CGA. I remember getting my first 1200 baud modem and spending countless hours on BBSes.

Nope, dual sport rat bike since Linux is known for "techy" types.

FWIW, I've got a Win 7 tablet pc which is way cooler than my Macbook and far more functional than my iPad. Working in web design/development I've got or have access to just about every major internet capable device/browser/computer but the 3 above along with my Nook (which doubles as an Android tablet) are the ones I actually use regularly.

At one time or another all of the portable ones have been out on my scoots though the Windows tablets are the most commonly carried computer since that's primary real work machine.

If you want to talk about first computers Kaypro with dual single sided floppies, one for the OS & one for everything else. Though that isn't what I first programmed that was some mainframe that I don't recall if I even knew what in computer class back in the mid 70s.

I configured and built my own windoze machines for 10 years. Bought first MacBook for wife to use in Masters program. I liked it so much I put the last windoze desktop in storage and we each bought new MacBooks. The original still works well. Added iPad and Apple TV. iPad is the nicest remote I've ever had! My only bitch is the level of difficulty to replace keyboard on my MacBook3,1. Oops almost forgot, and an Apple wireless router, nicest I've ever used!

Most of my machines run Linux. Free is good! It allows me to spend more money on Vespas. Some of the machines are dual-booted with Win. Due to software requirements. Otherwise, I'd be all Linux. I'm partial to the Mint distro, a derivative from Ubuntu.

Like the paint job in your profile pic.

You can make a survey say anything you want by properly phrasing questions and selectively extracting results. Especially the sweet white wine one since the only PC folks I know who would ever even consider White Zin are of my parent's generation. <shudder> Pretty much everyone I know wears jeans far more than "trendy" clothes. The ones who do wear trendy are typicallly younger but even most of my college age son's friends tend to jeans or shorts.

Besides there are a lot of people who are multi-platform now days. Many with PCs use iPhones or iPads while others have Android (Linux variant) based tablets like the xoom. The world isn't simple enough to be one vs the other.
