I found this forum while doing a Scroogle search for "vespa riders."
Very happy to have found a discussion group devoted to newer machines! But I have one question. Is this goup limited to 150cc's and above? After scanning the member profiles, I get the impression there aren't many 50cc owners here. Am I off base?
Anyway, I'm a professional dog walker, and I use my LX50 to get to my clients' homes. They love it! I put my logo in the license plate space, and am thinking of getting the logo stenciled on the side.
I wish the scooter wasn't such a pissant about could weather, though. Is that a Vespa phenomenon, or a scooter-in-general thing?

I hope to be a helpful member of this community.

Welcome Scootawap.....I'm fairly new here too but I don't think it's limited to 150cc and above......I think you'll find everyone is very friendly and will try to help all they can. Take care and happy scootin'/dog walkin'.

Hello, and welcome, Scootawop.
I'm just an amateur dog walker. The LX50 and dog walking go together; One's environment friendly, and the other's animal friendly. How many miles have you put on your LX50 so far?

Scootawop - You're quite welcome here. There's no particular restriction on who can be a member (we have some non-Vespa, non-Piaggio owners here) and we're most certainly open to anyone riding any Piaggio product.

Welcome. What an interesting line of work! I've heard about such emerging occupations but living in a remote rural area, I don't know anyone who does that.

The cold weather can be challenging. A windshield, gloves, fullface helmet and layered riding gear can make it much more comfortable. You'll see suggestions for each, on this board.

Since I use my LX150 for my business purposes, I write most of my annual mileage off. I'd expect that you can do the same in Michigan, check it out.

cheers

Re: Introducing myself
Hey Scootawop,

Welcome to the friendly scooter board! I love the "Frances walks your dog" logo. I showed it to my dog, Chloe, and she says that she especially likes the part about walking happy dogs, because she's always happy when it's time to walk even if she has to wear a Gentle Leader... I think it's wonderful that you've found an occupation for your scooter, but I wonder, how do you handle the Michigan winter on a scooter?

Welcome Scootawop!

What is the exact problem you are having with your scooter in cold weather? Is it hard to start or something else?

I rode my ET4 last winter here in Colorado and never had a problem with it starting.

Thank you all for your warm welcomes!

Addicted, Shiloh is a beauty. She has a worldly-wise look in her eyes.

Nukie, yes, it's reluctant to "turn over", though it will after a while. On a day I don't ride it, I wheel it into a sunny patch on the driveway, and let it "get warm." Then I attempt to start it. It will take a few tries. I keep it stored in our (unheated, unattached) garage, with a thick blanket over its rump, thinking that will keep it "warm." I'm probably anthropomorphizing, but there's alot to be said for the placebo effect!

This worked for my ET4.
Welcome Scootawop.

If the ambient air temperate is -10C (50F) or below, a special cold starting procedure must be followed:

1. Turn on the ignition.

2. Turn the engine over several time, by depressing the kick starter.

3. Wait for about 2 minutes, to allow the carburetor electric heater to warm the carburetor.

4. Start the engine in the normal manner.

I skip step 2 and it starts every time in cold weather. I used to have trouble before using this technique.

See: Carb Warmer

Welcome aboard Scootawop! I hope you enjoy your stay, lots of good folks and support on this site.

I have a Min-Pin that thinks she is full size. She loves to "run", not sure if walk is known to her. Your logo is cool by the way, Beale.

50cc's too slow for me
Welcome to the group and to scootering! I rode 50cc for several years before deciding I wanted to venture farther from my house and on roads where cars typically go 50, so that's why I got an ET4 and eventually a GT 200. I miss the look of 50cc's, they're so cute and scooter-like. Very good idea on emblazoning your business signage (very cute) and very tax-deductible! Hey, have you considered adding a dog-related seat cover to your LX? I think this fabric would be perfect!

You can get it on www.scooterseatcovers.com, owned by Crystal, a very good friend of mine.

I'm not a big dog lover but there are lots of people who are! I convinced a local scooter friend to combine his two favorite things and Crystal published the results on Vespaquest today!

http://www.vespaquest.com/2006/01/cotons_and_vesp.html

Glad you posted and introduced yourself, even checked us out to see what we ride. You'll also find that many of us with bigger scooters also have smaller ones.

Frances, welcome!

Echoing everyone else, thumbs up for your fabulous job-- & I also vote for the doggie print scooter seat (tax deductible, of course).

On cold weather starting, I use the method Tim outlined, without the kick start step. I add 2 twists to the throttle before hitting the ignition. Always starts!

You might want to get a battery charger if it gets really cold. Lots of scooter & motorcycle folks use Battery Tender or Battery Tender Jr..

And some of us are using heated gear. I just started using heated gloves, and like 'em a lot.

Happy scootin'!

I've got three Min-Pins myself, and I know what you mean when you say she thinks she's full size. We call them "German Bedding Dogs", because pretty much all they want to do is be under a blanket with mom or, if mom's not available, dad.

They're also nearly impossible to train. High intelligence, very low obedience. Bad combination.

You folks are so welcoming!
Lisa, I can't thank you enough for posting that fabric sample. I zoomed over to Crystal's website and asked her to make a seat cover for me in that cool print. And thanks also for the link to VespaQuest...I'll be looking in there frequently.
Bryce Ludwig, I'm glad you're a member here. I recognized your name from the other scooter board. I don't look in there much, as the Vespa-dissing gets a little out of hand at times.
Thanks to TFauch and pdvespa for the cold-starting tips. Much appreciated!

Hi Frances, and welcome to Modern Vespa!

Brought a boat back for a friend from your neck of the woods a couple years ago. (We're west of Cleveland) Pretty area. We go up around Empire every few years, usually in the off season. Damn tourists!

Be sure to add yourself to the member map stickied at the top of this forum.

The puppy paw seat cover would be perfect with both your scooter's color and your business. That's so cool! I know Crystal has a pattern for your scooter, because I sent my saddle to her for the LX to use for making the pattern.

Several of us have (or had) 50cc Honda Metropolitan's, too, so we have a small contingent of non 125cc and up riders.
