It was a long, slow, back-and-forth shaking. Pictures rattled on the walls, but nothing knocked over or damaged as far as I know.

It's been revised downward to 4.2, but that's bigger than any I've felt since moving to California a couple years after the Loma Prieta quake. The faults have been nearly silent for the 15 years I've lived here.

I was probably riding across the Bay Bridge, always a great place to be in an earthquake Laughing emoticon

Chris said it felt like a set of sharp jolts over here in East Oakland.

KGO
Was listening to KGO out of SF when the quake hit. They stopped what they were doing for a second or two to see how much was coming.

The only quakes I have felt were in Seattle and Japan - both very minor - I know it can be 'interesting' as long as it isn't too big........

4.2 on the Richter...Lafayette Rocks?
Come on Bay Area MVers! You know a 4.2 is just a quiver if you were around for the 89 Loma Prieta shaker.

It does remind you to check up on your emergency supplies.

Good weather this weekend, hope to see you at the Swap Meet!

Yeah, it was back and forth for a while. Chris said it was the strongest one he's ever felt, then I reminded him of the one in Hawaii and he changed his mind. Nothing fell over at our house either but we always notice new hairline cracks in the plaster.

My sister is a bartender in Orinda and she said that she almost fell down when it happened.

Yeah that was some scary sh*t.

I lived in Mill Valley, on the foothills of Mt. Tam back then. I watched as my parent's car, which was parked in our driveway that's on a hill, bounce down about 15 feet and crash into a large outdoor potted/rock plant fixture on our lawn. Literally bounce - clearing the ground and everything.

My dad was working in SF at the time, took him almost 8 hours to get back home after that.

I was here for the 89 quake and it was bad but I will have to say being on the 39th floor in the hotel for the Hawaii Rally quake was scarier.

Fifteen years (for me) of almost dead silence from the fault lines vs. 15 years of snow in the last place I lived (Milwaukee). I think the gamble paid off.

This is the well-kept secret of California -- the earthquakes aren't that bad. Even the Loma Prieta quake, which was a Major Quake, didn't kill that many people. Tornados and hurricanes kill more people on a yearly basis than earthquakes in California.

I heard a comic once sum it up nicely: "In California, we have all kinds of natural disasters: earthquakes, mudslides, El Nino flooding, wildfire, riots, and so on. After a natural disaster, we pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and go back about our business living in the Great State of California. In Cleveland, none of these things ever seem to happen. But you're still living in Cleveland."

(apologies to Cleveland MVers. I know it's not so bad anymore. I used to live in Ohio, when it was much worse, and anyway, that's how the joke went).

Curt,

If those island hotels are sprung like the buildings here, that hotel must have really rolled! 8)
