Modern Vespa

Hey help me make a list of spare parts one should carry on a Silver GTS on lets say a cannonball run....

*In your left pocket, a credit card.
*In your right pocket, a change of underwear.
*In your money belt, $100 cash for each day you plan to be on the road.
*Cell phone is optional.

I've made myself up a tool kit that includes the tools that came with the GTS. My kit also includes a complete assortment of light bulbs, leatherman, ends wrenches (17mm, 13mm, 10mm & 11mm), a Craftsman Professional adjustable end wrench with longer jaws, small flashlight, socket rachet with 6" extension, 10mm socket, star socket to take muffler off, socket with allen head for removing wheels, and swivel attachment to put on 6" extension with 10mm socket for removing header pipe with exhaust, some various allen wrenches, electrical tape, a bit of electrical wire with some various electrical connector ends, a couple of large hose clamps, extra fuses, wire ties (big and small), a couple of rags and a pair of rubber gloves, matches and a some super glue. All of this is in a 6x12x3 inch bag that rides in the trunk.

................and credit cards, AAA, cell phone, health insurance card, emergency cash, a spare tire on really long trips, throttle cable, extra gas, tire repair kit, extra keys, small first aid kit, heated riding gear, and maybe a GPS.

for an epic trip:

supplies
a 12" length of 1/4" fuel line
two 1/4" fuel line splce connectors
four small 9/16"~1/4" hose clamps
two large 1" hose clamps
spark plug
spark plug cap
1/2 a quart of oil
small roll of duct tape
tiny roll of electrical tape
a tiny amount of bailing wire
tire plug kit w/ CO2 cartridges

tools
stock tool kit (double ended screw driver, plug socket and 13mm wrench, 6mm allen key)
needle nose vise grips
slip joint pliers
a tiny flat blade screw driver
10mm box end wrench
cell phone & a few green backs

anything that the above can't fix, you shouldn't be fixing at the side of the road anyway. no gas, either. transporting gas is not a very bright idea. especially considering the temps that are reached in the pet compartment-- let alone the ramifications of what could happen to the fuel in the event of an accident. modern bikes have a gas gauge. if you run out, it's your own dammn fault. in the unfortunate circumstance should that happen, call the auto club and demand the full gallon of petrol.

if you're staying close to home:
credit card, some cash and a cell phone is all you need.
the one thing people always neglect when out day riding is warmer clothing. yeah it might be sunny and 70 when you leave, but what's it gonna be like on your way back. take a scarf, an extra light jacket and your light weight rain gear. the rain gear can be used as a wind breaker to keep out the chill if things get real nasty.

When I traveled by boat I made it a policy to carry spare moving parts- principally pumps. I wonder if the water pump is likley to fail? It would seem to be a relatively simple job to remove the pump and put a new one on.
The downside would be getting one out of Piaggio and paying for it. The good part is eventually you will need a new pump so if you don't need during an epic ride it will be tucked ina drawer at home.
You could go crazy with this and carry all sorts of electrical gubbins "just in case."
I have found that if you have the part ( and the service manual) even if you haven't a clue how to assemble it, you can usually get heklp. without the part you are frequently sunk (baling wire notwithstanding).
I diagree about carrying fuel but greasy is the mechanic- I'm the traveler ( and thus by defienition the risk taker!).

I would burn a copy of the service manual and the parts manual from the tech section and bring it along. Its smaller than a printed one and if necessary you should be able to view it someplace, unless you are in the middle of nowhere, then you are screwed.

And sunblock. I like the zinc cream for my nose which burns horribly and easily. And mosquite repllent in case I actually want to stop and enjoy the view.
