I purchased a clear LED rear light/brake bulb, it works as a rear light but not as a brake light. I managed to get a replacement and at it too only works as a rear light. If I refit my stock bulb it works as it should :?.

Any ideas? The LED is:

180 degree
12V 5/21W
1157

Hi,
I bought a 'flashing' LED brake bulb from autolumination.com and it works great. If you used that source, they have an instruction page refering to putting it in 180 degrees if it doesn't work....that said, the 1157 bulb only goes in one way!
Curious what bulb you actually have; 1156 maybe? Not sure you could push in the wrong one.

rear / tail light working
i too had replaced the tail/brake bulb with an LED. it lasted a very short time before i realized i didn't have a brake light coming on anymore. possibly a cheap/bad batch/make ?

went back to the standard bulb with more life, though theory says the LED is supposed to last much longer... just not on my $8 again.

Did you buy a dual-element LED replacement bulb, Wendy? Compare the base of your standard bulb with your LED replacement bulb. There should be 2 contacts at the bottom of the bulb, and the orientation and height of the two projections at the side of the bulb should match too. If your LED replacement bulb has only a single center contact at the bottom, it will not work for the brake light function. If the LED replacement bulb appears to be compatible, be sure to push the bulb inward and turn it clockwise to properly orient it into the bayonet socket.

I had also bought 2 matrix II bulbs from autolumination.com and they have since broke(2 months) and eventually they told me that their bulbs are not meant to work with a battery charger like the battery tender. I asked them to help me replace them with ones that would work, but they would not answer my emails. Of course they do not say anywhere on their site that their bulbs do not work with battery chargers. Beware when replacing bulbs with LEDs from that company.
