Doing a little DIY on the 1998 50s Vintage, and decided to put on new tyres. They came apart ok but there is some corrosion. The back rims are the worst.

How do these look, and what do i need to do, if anything

1. back rim A

doesn't look too bad. get the wire wheel out and clean them up so there is nothing that could flake off and damage the tube.

after you get all the rust off be sure and prime/paint it. because water will find its way back in there.

Yeah, wire brush and a good rust inhibiting primer on those spots will do fine.

On my restos, if the inside is badly rusted I go to sandblasting. Then use a brush-on two-part epoxy primer. Then paint.

We are trusting our life to these little pieces of pressed metal and rubber bits.

Thanks. That's exactly what I did. Used a wire wheel on the end of the drill, then a rust inhibiter.
All back together now with new tubes and tyres.

Think i'll degrease the engines this afternoon.

I guess typically, with these sorts of projects, you finish one thing, then something else needs attention.
I had some old decals on the left rear cowl area. After googling what to do, I used a hair dryer and plastic spatula. Most came off nice and easy, but a couple of the older ones which had already started to break up and were very dry and crumbly took some of the paint surface off.

What to do, what to do

For the wheel, one can also get a POR15 kit and treat the rims so the rust will hold off longer.

As for the cowl...if the paint was peeled off and has a stepped ridge, you can try getting touch up paint in a compressed can and hit it...maybe try to build it up, but it will never look as good as if you were to get it painted professionally.

Before and after sand blasting today.
I was thinking to use these rims for my Sprint restoration. I guess I will have to look for another set...
