What happened? I'm riding along and twisted the throttle when super dies. I coast to the curb and try to restart but no luck. Just grinds the starter.

Had the fuel pump replaced two weeks ago under the recall. Does it sound like a bad replacement.

Check the spark plug cap and lead - these have to be moved in the tank removal process, so may not be tight after replacement. First thing to check, anyway, and easy enough to do.

Yep same happened to me. I replaced the pump and didn't connect the plug lead correctly and came to a halt in the middle of nowhere.

The dilemma was; the engine was hot. With my glove on I didn't get burnt but I lacked mobility. With my glove off I had mobility but burnt my hand. I waited until it was like working on hot wax. Ouch Crying or Very sad emoticon

Thanks, jimc and Monit.

The tow truck arrived 45 minutes early-good thing because it was freaking cold out-so I didn't a chance to check the lead. I spoke with the dealer today and they said the lead was too short causing it to disengage from the spark plug when I went over a bump. So, they installed a longer lead. Also, they wanted to double check the fuel pump and make sure it wasn't anything else. I'm waiting for a call back from the dealer with the final verdict.

Thanks again for the quick response and I'll know what to look for if this ever happens again.

BTW: Piaggio Roadside Assistance covered the cost of the tow.

Great news Danners and the fact that Piaggio picked up the tab was a bit of icing on the cake.

Beware the longer lead. It can sag down (especially when riding two up) and come in contact with the exhaust. That's what happened to mine and the insulation eventually melted enough to short the spark lead with the metal of the exhaust.

My mechanic eventually ended up routing the spark lead up and away from the exhaust so the problem couldn't reoccur.

Thanks, Treppenwitz. I'll make sure it isn't sagging. I never ride two up but that doesn't mean it'll never happen.
