Please could someone put me straight on the above question.
I was led to believe that my vespa was made in pontedera, italy.. not that it matters but.. some bright spark has informed me that 90% of my vespa is manufactured in Taiwan ?.

There's a lot of really good scooters made in Taiwan. Vespa is not one of them... but it's still a really good scooter, and still made in Italy.

It depends on what you mean by "made in ..."

Lots of the parts are made in Taiwan and even China. The assembly happens in Pontedera. Does that mean it's made in Taiwan? no.

The truth is that the "made in" label is fairly ambiguous these days.

I worked at a Vespa dealership and saw all the crates they were delivered in. They all came from Italy and were very clearly marked.
Ducatis also came from Italy and BMW's came from Germany.

There is no doubt that Vespas for the European and American market are assembled in Italy (look at the origin code on the VIN plate). As Jess points out, individual parts could come from all kinds of sources. Some Vespas for the Asian market are assembled at a Piaggio plant in Vietnam. An additional plant for Vespas for the Asian market is being built in India. Where South Africa obtains their various Vespa models can be determined by reading the VIN plates if there is any uncertainty. They certainly do NOT come from Taiwan.

If you buy a Toyota Corolla here in Europe you may think it's made in Japan, but it is made in Turkey really. To me it's made in Turkey then no doubt about.

How about Vespa then. If parts comes from far east and are assembled in Italy, does it mean it's Italian? Maybe. But if they put air to tires and check oil level in Italy before sending it to dealers, I think it's not made in Italy. But then where is the limit? Truth may be somewhere between these two extremes.

I think that latest instrument clusters cannot be more chinese when it comes to appearance. You find "Made in China" from wheels too if you look carefully. But then why bother? These are fun to ride, and reasonably priced. And sure they would be much more expensive if they were made in Italy completely. There is no cheap labor in Italy anymore, it's for sure.

Reason for edit: One of spelling errors.

MONIT just the opposite Laughing emoticon I was getting a ride in a taxi in the southern part of China (going to the airport) and i asked the driver why he didn't have a scooter like the one that was in front of us. He didn't miss a beat and says "no way it's made in China" Laughing emoticon So i'm guessing made in the USA would be just fine by him.

You can see a GTS being assembled in Pontedera in this thread. You can see some pre-built components coming out of packing/shipping crates for final assembly...

How a Modern Vespa is made..

As Jess said, you'd struggle to find any modern machine that originates 100% in the same country - it's a thing of the past now.

I've heard that American made items are very well respected in China. Especially vintage things like guitars and Harleys. They like Buicks also, for some reason. China saved Buick from the axe during the GM downsizing.

Off the subject, but Buick big in China because royality had used Buick and bigshots copied them. Tiawan made Ok by me: they make good stuff. It is the mainland product to avoid.
