I am reminded that Piaggio Italy in an awesome company and nobody is more aggressive and progressive in the industry right now. Think the tide is turning for us all. This and the new Tuono and just simply a cut above.

The Cali looks very sleek and Cali looking, if that makes sense. A real Boulevard cruiser.

Done.

And yes, the 850 still has a chain drive. Many might think this a Good Thing. It isn't. The recommended change time for chain and pinions is at 18,000 miles. Here in the UK the parts alone are GBP600. It takes four hours to do *if* it's been done before and you know the procedure.

My guess is that'll translate to USD1,800 in total every 18,000 miles. You've still got the usual belt and roller costs every 12,000 miles - and rollers do NOT last that 12,000 miles, only 6,000 if that. That's also a huge bugger to do.

A belt drive is out of the equation as the drive pinion isn't at the pivot point of the swingarm. A shaft drive would work just fine - but they normally incur large maintenance overheads at some undefined intervals.

If cash is no object - fine for dealer maintenance. If you do your own maintenance (as I do) then it's just reasonable.

LOL Desmolicious!

Close comparison to the prototype shown in Milan will show very subtle differences: there's a bit more of a bustle in the rump (the prototype would allow about .75" suspension travel), and the louvres are not quite as pronounced. There look to be more bits from a GTS/GTV in the suspension, too. I rather liked the wheel covers on the prototype... hope they consider offering them as an option.

Hoo-boy, my page views are gonna go off the charts in a few hours...

It's the exact same bike. Probably physically the same unit, still a concept, still with a beefy display stand bolted to the bottom and a clear cutaway to show off the engine.

Piaggio's media site has a collection of their standard press kit images for the 'Vespa 946' which must be what they're going to call it. No specs or other info yet...

I would like to clarify I'm passing on what I have been told regarding the 2013 final product. I have received a very valid concern via PM that this prototype is not exactly what will be produced. Both my source and the concerned party are extremely knowledgeable about Piaggio so I am going to go as high up as our CEO in the
next day or so (travel time) and report back.

Those are the same images they had at EICMA and are dated 11/2011.

The Piaggio press release from EICMA also calls the scooter the 946.

Specs, from the EICMA press release:
Quote:
Techno(eco)logical milestones

Vespa Quarantasei (forty-six, the name refers to the year in which the first Vespa was manufactured) opens a window to the future in technology as well.
The beating heart of the Vespa Quarantasei is an extremely modern engine which unveils the development lines of motoring in the new future, characterised by low fuel consumption and decreased gas and sound emissions.

The single cylinder 125 cc 4 stroke, 3 valve, air cooled engine with electronic injection represents Piaggio Group's state of the art technology in scooter engines.

The new engine has been designed, developed and manufactured entirely in Pontedera, Piaggio's largest plant, which is one of the most advanced engine development and production centres in the world. This engine is born from the challenge that the Piaggio Group has taken on: to provide an increasingly more evolved customer with a product that guarantees performance, reliability and safety while also leading the field in respect for the environment.

An extremely modern engine

The innovative 3 valve timing which characterises the Vespa Quarantasei engine allows optimisation of the load motion in the cylinder both in terms of tumble and swirl as well as optimal positioning of the spark plug, increasing combustion performance and at the same time guaranteeing optimum cooling of the parts inside the head.

For all of the bodies in motion bearings have been used in order to keep internal friction to a minimum: the timing rockers have a roller, all to the advantage of reducing noise and increasing mechanical efficiency, the camshaft is on bearings as well as the entire final drive.

The cooling system was carefully analysed, even through thermal fluid-dynamic simulations, in order to further improve performance, thereby obtaining significant reduction in terms of absorbed power and acoustics.

The injection system is state of the art for functionality and rideability, with automatic idle control and closed-loop titre management with a lambda probe. The three dimensional maps of advance, titre and injection timing are managed by a new generation control unit. Together with the trivalent catalytic converter, compliance with the Euro3 standard is more than guaranteed, even in anticipation of future standards which will be increasingly restrictive in terms of containment of polluting emissions.

Performance, with a maximum power at crankshaft of 8.7 kW at 8,250 rpm and maximum torque of 10.3 Nm at 7,000 rpm (for the 125) and 9.7 kW at 8,000 rpm and maximum torque of 12.6 Nm at 6,500 rpm (for the 150) place the new engine at the top of these respective categories.
That's not the release on the Piaggio site, but the one they sent out via EICMA.
