Hi all,

Just a quick question which I asked in towards the end of thread but thought I'd post on it's own as were wandering off-topic.

I have a 50c ET4 with a sightglass underneath where the oilfill is.
Is it normal with to have no dipstick? What I have is like the usual dipstick but without the stick if that makes sense. It's not broken off, just looks like it never had it.
Anyway, the glass looks pretty black so I can't really see anything. Does this happen sometimes, is it normal? And if so how do I check the oil level as unless I've got it wrong I thought the idea of the glass is that you;re able to see the oil level?

Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated as have only just got the scooter so quite new to the modern Vespa world!

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. Will try and take a better pic tomorrow but I do have this one for now.

If your ET2 is the same as my ET4, the black plastic cap to the right of your photo is both your oil flller cap and your dipstick in one - it should look like this pic. The bottom of the stick has the min/max oil level marks - shown in red. If yours is broken off, I'd get a new one.

My ET4 doesn't have a sightglass so no experience of it. Guess it was either to check oil condition rather than level or to do both.

Might be worth you getting the Haynes manual for your ET - it'll help with all these standard checks in one place

Check this is the right one but I think so...

Hope that helps

Hi Matt:

The earlier ET4 (called 'pre-leader') used a sight glass instead of a dipstick.

.... except that particular ET4 doesn't have a leader engine in it The ET4 only got the leader engine after about 2000. What you have there is a pre-leader ET4, rare as hen's teeth on your side of the pond. If you search this forum under 'pre-leader' you'll find quite a bit of information, including (i think/hope) a full wiring diagram, which i posted some time ago.

There's a Haynes manual available for this model - you want the one that covers Vespa ET2 and ET4, 1996 to 1998 (it also covers a load of other models like Typhoon, Sfera, Zip, Hexagon, etc.).

How old Is your ET4 50 as the 1st one's had a sight glass and no dipstick on filler cap

The sight glass did get dirty leading to oil related problems ( as in no oil Laughing emoticon ) so piaggio changed this on newer models & done away with the sight glass and added a dipstick .

You can remove the sump part and clean window then replace with new gasket , But a £3 new dipstick would be the easy option

Thanks for all the help everyone, much appreciated!

Well, I expected to find a dipstick like that when I opened the cap. However, it's just a cap, looks like that but has no stick on it!

It's a 2004 scooter but definitely with the sightglass as you can see in the pic. I know from searching there's been some confusion over the differences between the ET4 50 and ET4 125.

Does anyone know the best UK place to buy spare parts? That dipstick is no longer available or in stock on that site. Have been looking on ebay but can't find anywhere. If I knew the length and measurements of the markings then I guess I could make my own.
Or failing online, any London shops that sell bits and pieces (want to put a new air filter in too).

Thanks again for the help, want to make sure it's running rather than killing the thing after only having for a week!

London Scooter shops...

Geomoto
R A_G_I_U_S (take out the underscores for the real name, the system redacts the real name because it must think I'm using a rude word.. )

I'd take it to a good scooter garage to ask them exactly what you have. I'm thinking it's had an engine transplant.

Nice one, thanks. Had looked what shops were around but unclear on a lot of the websites if they actually stock parts or not. Want to get the parts and do myself rather than pay through the nose for something I'm able to do myself.
Geomoto's fairly local so will give them a try!

I think any Piaggio dealer shoiuld have access to the Piaggio parts system and order you in anything you need. I use VespaSpares (AJ Sutton) as a benchmark on price and to check the parts I need - they have schematic diagrams online for all the modern Vespa models. Might help you to do your homework on parts numbers etc even if you use a local dealer.

Thanks for the recommendations. Finally ordered a new air filter and dipstick from vespaspares.co.uk and hopefully will get them in time for the weekend. I presume I can get filter oil spray from Halfords or somewhere?

Thanks everyone.
