Hi everyone. Just delurking to say hello. I've decided to register as I'm finally getting a Scoot next week.

I used to ride Vespas and Lambrettas back when I was a lad, but finances and life meant I drifted away from the scene. I've been cycling a 17 mile round trip to work for the last few years but the attitude of motorists toward cyclists is only getting worse here. So I decided if you can't beat em, join em. Only instead of getting another car I'll get a scooter.

Started to look at the more modern japanese scoots at first, but the plastic and 'yoof' style graphics put me right off. So if it was going to be a Scooter, it had to be a Vespa. I originally intended to get an s125 until I realised that thanks to the bizarre output specs on the UK Motorbike test I would only ever be able to ride a 125 when I passed.

So then I decided to start looking for a 2nd hand GTS but they're like hen's teeth around my neck of the woods. I've only ever seen one GT for sale here and that got snapped up before I had a chance to see it.

Finally, I got myself a 2005 GT125. It's mine from next Wednesday.
Can't wait...

Except I have to. As I can't do my CBT until April

Anyway... Yo!

Welcome to the forum. So to ride a vehicle larger than 125 you will have to take another test?

Thems the rules round here!

Although I have only met a handfuls if people that would adhere to the spec limits, most think all 125's are game.
I've never seen a police man check, I even told one that my yam was a 125 and he believed it.

Hi, and cheers!

Yeah, if I pass my test on an s or lx125 I'd be restricted to riding 125's.
If I pass my test on a GT or GTS125 I can ride up to a 400cc automatic for (I think) the next 2 years. After that I can ride any cc I like, but only automatic.

Part of the British test is an emergency stop in a speed trap. You have to have accelerated to at least 32mph before performing the stop. The LX and S doesn't have the guts to do that in the time given.

Stinks, cos I love the shape of the s125. My first ever scooter was a 50 special so I have an affinity for the squared headlight

Thanks for the welcomes, guys.

You could buy the s and then rent one from the test centre on the day?
Also you know you'll be restricted to an automatic right?

Edit: sorry read it again, I saw the 400cc auto part

You're right LAE, I could have rented a bike for the test. But then I'd likely be on a bike with an unfamiliar layout. Not ideal in a test situation.

Besides, I'm sure I'm going to love my GT

Congrats on the scoot and welcome back to the family.

Every time I read these threads on the licensing I'm shocked in the states you don't even need a M endorsement to buy a ZX14 or Hayabusa, and once you have your M class you can ride anything... crazy.

Hi, congrats on the new scooter, I have only recently just joined the forum to. Norfolk based, in Norwich.

I like cycling as well and understand exactly what you mean about attitudes to cyclists. Luckily though I just cycle for fun and don't have to cycle to work anymore.

Good luck for the CBT!

Cheers guys, thanks for all the welcomes and good wishes.

*big wave to the fellow Norfolkites*

There's always been a strong scooterist present here, I don't live too far from one of the major UK rally destinations - Great Yarmouth. Not that I went to many rallies in me yoof. I mainly attended the Mod ones back then.

Hey Judy, no pics yet. I take delivery of the bike Wednesday so I'll stick some up then.

Have a great weekend peeps.

Cheers

Except it does.

I've got an S125 and I know how quick I can get up to 32mph.

The DVLA compile their list of vehicle categories based on the figures the manufacturer quotes for top speed, and piaggio must have been seriously conservative about those 125s.

I can easily get up to 65 on mine. It's dynod at 67mph.

davidmasse is right -- this group IS addictive...almost as much as riding your Vespa! Welcome and just enjoy your scoot and take each licensing phase as it comes. I'll have to say, though, that here in California, once you get your "motorcycle endorsement" you can ride anything...and I took my test on my 300GTV! Guess the main thing is, just enjoy the ride!

Good morning at happy saturday from the west midlands. Glad you came back onto the scene. I'm too partial to a bit of cycling but as you rightfully state, its too blooming dangerous! Make sure wednesday you get some pictures on. The modern vespa crowd love a piccy or two!

Welcome!

Congratulations on your scoot find and best wishes when you take the test. April really isn't that far away...having the scoot and being able to see her and touch her will make the time go by quickly (I hope).

I'll be sure to post a few pics once she's mine.

Evening all.

Thought I'd show my face again seeing as I'm finally on the road. Passed my CBT on Monday morning. Should have been Sunday afternoon but some in my group found it all rather 'challenging'! I was lucky that one of the instructors took pity on me and volunteered to come in on her day off so that I could do my road ride, and I'm extremely grateful to her for doing so.

Just wish this effing weather would sort itself out. Seems as soon as pull my lid on the heavens decide to open. Apart from Monday when I got an hour and a half of shakedown riding in I've only had one day where I've gone to work and back in the dry. That was today, and that was touch and go.

Anyway, it's good to be back. Every now and again I realise I"m riding along with an enormous grin on me face
