Decide what? Whether to paint, or what color, or...?

(I think powder coating is the way to go, btw...)

Painted mine this winter while putting on new City Grips. Not as good as powder coating but looks pretty good for now.

Looks good.

What paint did you use and how well did it hold up when mounting the rubber?

I used Duplicolor wheel paint and it got a little scuffed up during my installation. Im still happy with the results though. I only have about 200kms on the new tires (great btw), so we will see how the paint holds up.

Your vintage red makes me turn green with envy every time I see it! The matching rims really give it a great look.

Colors and such.

Powder coating is right way, but I will join the dark side and paint them with duplicolor rim paint.
I have done this in the past and they lasted 3 winters before they peeled.
Value for money 10/10

It's all about the prep and the right steps.

I think I will post a DYI with a disclaimer that one should do this only if is willing to strip them - sandblast them and powder coat them in case he does a mess.

Many thanks for my pinup. Just what I wanted.

I notice the blue Vespa has its wheels painted to match. More inspiration for you. 8)

I dunno. The company I used informed not to have the inside around the rim painted.

Actually a 2K paint job is just as good as powder IMO. The problem is finding a powder coater that doesn't half-ass it. Powder coating, just like painting, requires ironclad prep work to look good and to adhere and to be durable. You need to find a professional. Trouble is most "professionals" are amateurs that bought a Harbor Freight powder booth and an old used kitchen oven then declare themselves professionals. They don't know to media blast with fine glass beads beforehand to enhance adhesion, they handle the parts with greasy dirty paws before they spray the powder, they use cheap ass powder, don't mask off the threaded holes, etc. I have had countless items powder coated over the years and these details are invariably missed by these so called "professionals".

The paint guys I know are far more disciplined and their finishes last. I've had peeling powder coat on many items I've sent out to the powder coater buffoons. And they aren't cheap either. I won't say never again, but my experience is most outfits do not do powder coating correctly.

2k paint requires a 2K primer, but on aluminium alloy an extra couple of steps need to be taken for max adhesion. I use what the aircraft guys use to make their paint jobs stick no matter what: Bonderite and its accompanying metal prep wash. A lot of people do not know that aluminium oxidizes almost instantly, it forms an oxy layer that you can't see. This messes with long term adhesion. Hence the Bonderite, a chromate adhesion layer.

I know most of you will just send out and get it PCed because it's easy. Fair enough but understand that powder coating is not a fail-safe solution. The factory paints the wheels, and that should tell you something. I've never had an OE wheel finish fail on account of lack of proper prep.

I had the wheels painted to match the bodywork on both my vintage red GTS250 and my blue GTS300 Super.

Hello friends, I want to share with you how I painted the rims of my new Vespa GTS 300 HPE. In the video you will see the steps for painting in sequence. It is not difficult, anyone who decides can do it. It takes patience and desire. The result of the work done by myself is the best 🙂
I intentionally do not remove the tires from the rims, but reduce the tire pressure to 0.5 ATM and tuck under the rim board paper tape folded at the end. I had a case with newly painted wheels being scratched when changing tires.
I hope you like the video and motivate you to try to paint your wheels or some other detail on your favorite Vespa scooter 🙂
If you have any questions ask them I will be happy to answer them on YouTube. 🤗
Enjoy watching!
