What is it about Crotch Rocket riders constantly rev'ing their engines whenever I happen to pull up next to them during my commute.

I think it is pretty common to find in that species an insatiable need to rev at most every light they stop at.

Is it obvious that you are female, pony tail under the helmet, noticeable, er.., darts, etc? Its kind of a mating call showing that they are in "must" as they say in India.

But there is probably less there than meets the eye. I found myself doing it on my Harley in my young and stupid days when I was sitting at a stop light all by myself. Just listening to my pipes and saving lives. I never did it on my BMWs.

While the other answer probably hold a large amount of truth in the humor, there is also frequently a mechanical reason. Most of them idle like shit. Most of the sport bikes are running the same basic gearing and mappings that they need to pass CARB and and ECE emissions. These mappings set the idle tolerances very very low, and all three of the sport bikes I've spent time on all had a nasty 'cough' when coming up from idle in 1st gear. The only way to really avoid it is to keep the RPM's above idle, otherwise, you have a very real risk of stalling.

Let's face it. Stalling in 1st gear while next to a scooter *would* be rather emasculating

Lol.
That happened to me and Mr Hollybry last year.
He rides a Honda 650 cruiser bike, and me on my MP3.
We were sitting side by side at a stop light when a dude on a crotch rocket pulled up and started that Vroom Vroom crap.
So Mr. Hollybry Vroomed back at him a couple of times. Me, I just sat there between them shaking my head.
Suddenly, the light turned green. Mr Crotch rocket missed his gear somehow, Mr Hollybry's cruiser stalled. Meanwhile, I laid on the throttle and took off like a bat out of hell! Left them both in my scoootie scoot dust.
We have helmet intercoms and Mr Hollybry was laughing so hard that he couldn't hardly get the bike restared and going again.

Loved it!

I don't notice this habit as much around here with the sportbike riders as I do the unmuffled Harley/cruiser people.

I think 'twitchy wrist syndrome' is an official Harley-Davidson accessory.

Same here. Most of the sport bikes just hang back and disappear. The Harleys are the revv-sters around here, also the ones that feel the need to cut past you in your lane and fly off at 60 MPH.

My newest annoyance is the guys on unmuffled non-street legal dirtbikes. More and more of them.

They tried to offer this accessory, but it wasn't available in chrome so it didn't sell as well as they hoped. But now that flat black is the new chrome it might really take off. Laughing emoticon

Not just crotchers or cruisers....
I seem to see that same behavior amongst many vintage/manual shift scooter riders too.

It's a a habit that has it's roots in keeping the carb. From "loading-up" after periods of idling, so the bike will accelerate properly when the light turns "GO".

Or maybe it's just a man-thing! Razz emoticon

Was it a red Honda CBR250R? He was probably still mad about me smoking him off the line yesterday pulling out of a dual left turn lane. When the arrow turned green he pulled out all ginger like getting into gear. I gave it a big twist counter steered hard with a big lean and checked him out in my rear view. About a half a block later he screamed by at 60 mph plus in a 45 mph zone.

I must be the only one in the world who doesn't mind having a small...uh....you-know-what (see avatar).

In fact, I feel that it's an advantage at times, I mean, why carry around a full-size spare tire in your car when one of those little, runt-like, vestigial tires will do just fine in the rare event of a flat tire? It saves space, it saves weight, and what's sillier than a big, fatty-whitewall hidden away in the boot. What a waste!

Not to mention that my acceptance and satisfaction with being a sexual midget makes me immune from 'short-dick' insults when I blip my throttle at a stoplight or do a smoky burnout with my red corvette (or in my 'real life' case, a blue Civic)

Back in the '70's during my college days I bought a Honda CB450.
A friend of mine who was too scared to ride as a passenger,
much less drive a motorcycle, in a passive-aggressive fit of jealousy said to me
"Don't you know that motorcycles are just a phallic symbol?
I reponded with "Well, if I had known that I would have bought a bigger one!"
He never mentioned it again.

It's a "manly thing" NOT... Clown emoticon just having fun probably...or if the sportbike does not "like" to idle (CV carbs are tricky to tune when you have 4 of 'em)...and my Katana did like to "bog" if sitting at a light for awhile. 8)

Wow. You guys read way too much into this.

My Suzuki (NOT a sport bike) takes a few minutes on the road for the carbs - there are two - to get "settled in" after warming up. By manipulating the throttle at a stop - quick versus short bursts - I can better tell which of the three jets in one of the carbs might be getting gummed up, or if the accelerator pump is dirty. Also, if the idle hangs - won't return to idle quickly enough after high revs - then I might have a clogged jet or a vacuum leak. It means the difference between pulling the carbs off and cleaning versus dumping some fuel cleaner in the tank.

Usually, I can only tell after warming it up and getting on the road. And, to tell you the truth, there are about 100 other things on my mind at that time that are more important than impressing anyone nearby. It's simply not on my radar.

You never know, the kid might trying to chase down a problem with a mod on the bike.

revving it or not depends how sporty I'm feeling or if the bikes idling rough, tbh i find it a little odd (egotistical perhaps) that people seem to think i do it get their attention. I've had someone ask me at lights before why i keep reving it and i didnt notice she was talking until she tapped me on the shoulder (must be a trick learned for the Mrs).

Its bad to say but a lot of the time i am aware of the bikes or cars at the lights for safety reasons but i pay them no attention or even acknowledge that they're there.

The complaint about reving and "fill in your complaint of the day here" is always interesting. Some will say these behaviors we object too are caused by little dicks, others it's the attention, still others will come up with another story. But what it really is, is that we all find some things that others do annoying to us. And because we are annoyed by it that person is automatically stupid and an idiot and not worth the air they breath (in the extreme case). I'll gaurantee you that the guy in the giant truck (you know... the guy with the small dick), is cursing that "slow tiny scooter" sitting infront of him at the traffic light. And the people who ride in shorts and sandles are laughing under their breath at stupid looking "Power Rangers" dressed in all their gear when they are out for a ride.

Bottom line... who cares. We all laugh at each other for the things we do that seem strange or goofy or anti-social. It's part of the human experience. I laugh as much as the rest. And sometimes I catch myself and laugh at how stupid I am.
