Motorists are reporting massive queues at petrol stations across the country and staff overwhelmed by demand.

The Petrol Retailers Association, which represents around 5,500 garages across the UK, reported that sales of petrol were up 85 per cent to a high of 140.70p per litre and diesel 43 per cent to 146.98 per litre on Wednesday.

On Thursday morning, motorists spotted prices as high as 160p per litre of unleaded (at a garage on the A31); a mile-long queue forming on the A41 near Watford and another near Reading; angry exchanges between customers at several petrol stations in London; and staff cordoning off stations like at an Esso in Leatherhead, Surrey.

Halfords reported a 467 per cent rise in demand for jerry cans.

Jon Hall, chief fire officer for both Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue Service and Gloucestershire Trading Standards, spoke out in the wake of a possible fuel shortage.

Yes, the government told us to panic, then stop, then panic only a little bit.

Apparently there are limited stocks of total stupidity available and you should rush to make sure you have an adequate supply.

I thought we had a vast supply of total stupidity in the UK, the government has been stock piling it for the past two years as they produce the majority of it.

was listening to the radio yesterday...

it seems you can buy a warm pasty on a warm day and not pay VAT ( value added tax)

but on a cold day you must pay the VAT ( 20% extra)

also if the pasties are just made and warm no VAT....

heated up...VAT

it wasn't April the first yesterday was it??

Yes, this was an amazing story. If the temp outside is more than 21 deg then the pasty is not considered as warm! Bonkers.

Fuel - also bonkers, but my wife had waited until we had no fuel at all and had to get some this morning - it took her about an hour.

Don't even get me started on this one!! My Mrs had to go to 3 petrol stations this morning and nearly ran out of fuel as they were all shut due to panic buying.

There appears to be unlimited amounts of total stupidity out here in the sticks. I was out in the motorised cage this afternoon, off to to the BIG SHOP and on my way to supermarket of choice I passed three garages (Morrisons, Tesco & Sainsbury's) where each had a queue of several hundreds of yards of cars waiting to get to the fuel pumps. Another garage was effectively closed as all pumps turned off. So even though there isn't a strike, thanks to our glorious leader, his wonderous spokesmen and the media egging it all on, a vast swathe of the population appears to have been infected by madness. Sometimes I think we get the government we deserve.. a bunch of pathetic amateurs lurching from crisis to crisis. And as for our media - nary a mention in the media about the wholesale sell-off of the NHS, but the mere whiff of a petrol tanker-drivers' strike and there's wall-to-wall coverage inducing panic.

AAAARRRGGHH!

Normal service will now be resumed.

I was listening to the radio this afternoon, first there'd be articles on how stupid one political side are for inciting the fuel shortage. Next they'd be talking about how the other party can't say anything because they're largely funded by the transport union. Finally there'd be a random article about either panic buying or about petrol stations closing or about how garages couldn't get any more fuel. They just seemed to be continuously stoking the fire - and this was Radio 4 - unbelievable! The funny thing is, no-one is even on strike yet!

We stole The Killing from the Dutch. They did an OK job with that one though. Check out the original (Forbrydelsen) if you can find it.

I went to 4 petrol stations today, the first had queues as long as the road that leads to it, so I went to another one, a shorter queue but a man running around the carpark with an orange hi-vis on telling potential customers there was no unleaded left. I drove to another one, sign up saying no unleaded, so went to a more expensive one, queued for only 15 mins, filled the cage up £112 to be exact. I wasn't panic buying I merely just needed to get some petrol, when I saw the state of the said 4 petrol stations, thought it would be benficial to fill it up. The onboard computer says I have approx 400 miles on that fuel. The Et2 has half a tank left, probably do about 400 miles on that. Might fill him up on the way to work tomorrow if there any left anywhere. At least its only £8 to fill up. Might even fill up the 5 litre tank in the shed, just incase. Its bloomin' mad.
Think I might start cycling.

I also found out today that (this week its been 25 degree's) lovely sunshine, sunburnt but Im now going a lovely brown colour, BBQ this afternoon, gardening done, bike and car clean, patio and driveway all jet-washed. Its been lovely. Anyway, I found out today..its gonna snow on tuesday..I mean what the hell is that all about??

Britain has gone mad, first its sunurn weather then snow, then petrol prices hit the roof....

I mean I called the police and said "I have just been robbed at the petrol station" they say "can you describe the offender" I say "yeah sure, it was pump number 5"

Fact
There's no strike and plenty of fuel left in the UK.

But hang on, If someone says that there "could" be strike and it may be a good idea to top up your tank a bit I think that's pretty good advice.

One thing is for sure getting fuel next week is going to be a doddle.

And also if you take someone's suggestion that it could be wise to get a little more fuel because there is a possibility of a strike ( even if the union has to give at least 7 days of one so that you and the fuel companies can prepare for it ) and you decide to act on it don't be suprised if the petrol stations are a little busier than normal.

Most of your crappy TV shows started out as crappy UK TV shows.

The British are feeling irked in relation to recent announcements of petrol shortages and queuing and may soon raise their level of concern from "Miffed" to "Peeved." Soon, though, if immigrants and recent new comers continue to panic buy it may be raised yet again to "Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Brits have not been "A Bit Cross" since petrol shortages were feared in the 50's when the Egyptians took the Suez Canal.
In the early 70's price hikes caused the British to regard the situation as Tiresome. If the petrol shortages become reality the level of frustration will be re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody Nuisance." The last time the British issued a "Bloody Nuisance" warning level was in the 1940's when petrol was in rationed.

The problem is the people who are panic buying fuel are not just waiting till they normally would to go to the petrol station or even putting in the same amount of fuel in their tanks. They are going and queuing and taking more petrol than they really need. They are creating a situation they are wanting to avoid.

I've posted this point on another thread but these are the people who panic buy bread and milk when the weather says there may be snow next week.
