I never play the lottery. House advantage is roughly 50% and the payoff which seems huge is relatively slim in comparison to the odds involved. I play blackjack if I want to win money.

My wife doesn't "play" the lottery either, but she did buy 10 tickets for this one. I bought 5. I promise I'll share some of it if I win!! Laughing emoticon

Not that it did me any good.

My wife just told me we didn't win. Damn.

All I wanted was a Martin Guitar and another two-wheel ride. I told her she could have the rest. I guess I'll have to buy them with money I've actually earned myself.

A Lamborghini would have been nice, too. Now that I think of it.

The odds of winning the jackpot are 176,000,000:1. So if you cover the numbers that will cost you $176,000,000 but you would win ~$600,000,000... BUT BUT BUT!!!... if someone else wins you have to split the jackpot, and if two others win, you'll have to split even more... then if you take the lump sum option they take another 50%.

No... I didn't buy a ticket. Razz emoticon

I'd buy one ticket because it's fun, but I'm not sure buying more than one really helps, especially if you consider that if you were the only one playing this current game and you had gone out and bought 500 million tickets, you still wouldn't have won.

Its always made me money... can't say the same for the $5 in lottery tickets I've bought in my life. Heck my whole trip to the High Rollers Rally in Vegas was paid for by the fine people @ Aria Resort & Casino!

The probability that you win if you have no ticket is 0, but is greater than 0 when you buy one ticket, increasing infinitely. Buying more than one ticket hardly changes the probability of winning, so is a waste...

I did not buy a ticket...

Not according to the article I found that gave the odds. They reported the odds at 176,000,000:1. So if you bought 176,000,000 tickets you'd be gauranteed a win. But if someone else wins you have to split that jackpot, then there is taxes.. etc... covering the numbers is a terrible strategy even with $600,000,000 jackpot.

I was thinking that they started the thing off at 12 million dollars and it goes up every week if no one wins; that's where the additional money comes from, from the non-winners. If you had personally bought all the tickets sold so far, you would not be happy.

I wanted to but live in the wrong state.

Help me out with that detail: If I had bought one online and won, wouldn't they have checked whether I was in IL at the time of purchase and have an address there? And if either turned out NO, then what? No win?

The odd are so against you/me/us. The chances of winning are so small....when I heard that if I purchased $100 of tickets every day it would take 33,000+ years to get a winner. Or if I purchased 1 ticked every 5 seconds to purchase one of every possible number combination it would take me 8+ years.
Remember the light bill in Vegas is paid for by loosers

I think I have a better chance of getting rich by starting a religion or becoming a politician! At least I would have a better chance of staying middle class.

Playing $5 is not a big deal when the prize is over half a billion dollars. Odds are way long but better than zero chance and not dropping a few dollars on the giant ones.

There are worse things I spent $5 on than a lotto ticket.

People don't buy lottery tickets because of (or in spite of) the math. They are buying a chance to dream for a moment.

It's the people who say things like "They can't do math" who are actually the oblivious ones, for they apparently lack any imagination or understanding of the human condition. Sad, really.

HAHAHA - Sorry Jess

the news here reported Uncle Sam with take a 3rd of the win, here, a win like that is not counted as "income", and is therefore not taxable - you get the lot!

Its probably a good thing that we did NOT win.

My BF would buy a jet, and and island and be Looooooong Gone, hanging out with silicon sisters and pole dancers I am a afraid.

Me - Lakefront property with a row cottages for family and friends and a hobby farm with cows that need milking and chickens that need feeding. Add in facilities for rescued animals and a vacation camp for sick kids and their parents.

Oh and probably give a million dollars to everyone on my family at least. And $500,000 each for my friends.
