Modern Vespa

okay... i have done the requisite search function on this site befor I posted and see that most of the "pilgimages" with Vesp-eye (plural right?) have been done in the US of A.

I need Canadian content. Any thoughts from fellow Canadian Vespa enthusiasts who have transported a "scoot" cross country, or at least from Toronto to the Maritimes? The 20 hour ride out (altho lovely) is too much of a challenge for this aging gal!

I have investigated the UHaul folk and as usual, they restrict the official "motorcycle trailer" (do they really have more than one?) to use in and around the province only. And of course, I am a law abiding citizen!

One of the gals that rides with us took hers down to Cape Breton on a versa hauler last summer, they bought it especially for the trip, I believe they go in a travel camper. That would be fantastic I think, to be able to ride Cape Breton.....

My wife and I drove two up on our GT200 out to Cape Breton and back from Toronto... We did this mid June 2005 and took 2 weeks to do so...

Day 1 Tor to Mtl
Day 2 Mtl to Quebec City
Day 3 Quebec City to Fredricton
Day 4 Fredricton to Charlottetown

Couple days in PEI the ferry over to Cape Breton then to Halifax, Digby then return home via ferry to St John's NB and the same route home...

Well Quentin, you're a plethora of info on NS. My wife and I visited Cape Breton two years ago and have been obsessed ever since with the idea of retiring there. We were hoping to make a trip back this summer but may have to sacrifice it to visit her family in Seattle in July. Hmmm, let's see, anything else going on in Seattle in July????

Most likely. Real estste is through through the roof here. We figure we can do an equity line in 15 years and have enough cash to buy the CB house outright! If so, then yes to your question. I don't know if I can ever leave these beautiful mountains.

Interesting responses, who knew that the Cabot Trail was such a popular Vespa trip!

Retiring to Eastern Canada has been a two year plan for us and it is about to happen! I can understand the move from the "south", my partner is from East Tennessee!. Now there is a great spot to ride!

Buying the GT200 was all about "doing" the Cabot Trail two up. Then there is the big "biker" rally in Digby with all of the "hogs". We hope to be the lonely scoot riders at that event! Thanks for the tip on where to stay in Peggy's Cove too! We will definitely plan to do a weekend trip and overnight at the B&B! Two years ago we purchased 30 acres just 40 minutes north of Mahone Bay and are building a log home in the spring. It is a dream come true!

Now.. the "versa hauler" , I will need to do some research on that... any idea of where to get one, cost , can you rent one? I did find out that there are two moving companies around that haul motorcycles/cars.. Mackie Movers and PMI. I have contacted both for estimates. No replies yet.

Have you considered purchasing a small utility trailer and transporting the scooter that way. We move our scooter to the cottage and back using the trailer all summer. A utility trailer might also come in very handy if you have a rural property. I don't think they are all that expensive. Ours is used to carry brush and all sorts of things at the lake. We carried our LX150 to Alaska and the Yukon last spring but it fit in our van. A 200 would not fit in our Safari van but would in a full size one. I am unsure as to what vehicle you drive and whether it would handle a small trailer. Good luck. We were in Mahone Bay and Lunenburg in the spring of 2004 and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Didn't have a scooter at that time though.

well.. to Jacqui.. the virtuoso of all things Vespa! I bought a Versa hauler!!! who knew... it is perfect for a gal in the country who is looking to do a lot of touring and traveling with her two best gals!

I contacted Burlington Vespa and spoke to Lou.. another true fount of information. He convinced me that rather paying for shipping the scoot, for the same price, I could own an 80 pound portable Versa "hauler" and get a lot more use out of it.

So.. we are good to go!.. Eastward HO!... Look out for that big white Ford Sport trac with Grannie Tourismo on the back end riding off into the sunset over the Atlantic ocean!

Good for you! I'm sure you'll get plenty of use out of it, and this way you can take the Vespa along when before you might not have thought about when travelling.

BTW, my ex-boss retired to Mahone Bay...I wonder if you know of him? I hear it's a pretty small place....
