Long time lurker, first time poster. I'll add the 'tar and all that in the coming weeks, but in the mean time...

I'm actually just getting my motorcycle license in 2 weeks and I'd like to get the address changed to my current address here in San Francisco.

However I'd like to, um, register my scooter at my permanent address in a more premium-friendly zip code.

Would this look really bad? Should my license address match my insurance policy's (which I have the option to do)? Would my insurance company even know?

Is that because you haven't had to file a claim yet? Or have you filed a claim and still had no issues?

no claims. but my license has that address... it's actually my mom's house and i'm not on the lease where i'm living so i'm not technically doing anything wrong.

i would think if you did have to file a claim you could just say you were there visiting and it isn't stored there, but at your permanent address. i guess it also depends on how far away that would be...

Yeah, I thought the "I was just visiting," excuse would work well, but then I realized that if I had to file a claim, I'd have to bring attention to my DMV record. They'd see the incident re the claim happened in San Francisco, and my DMV record is in San Francisco, but the policy is NOT under San Francisco.

I think I'll play it safe and keep my license address as my permanent address. Then the visiting excuse should sound much more legitimate.

It seems to me even the best Insurance company out there is not very keen on paying out money if they don't have to. Why make it easer for them to deny a claim by "fudging" on the policy? Play it straight, you'll sleep better at night knowing the scoot is covered.

Not to single sb21 out...just using an example: Insurance Fraud (like material misrepresentation to save money that deprives an insurance company of the the proper premium it is entitled to for the coverage is provides) is a Federal Crime. Would they prosecute this maybe-maybe not. But I could see a bill for past-premium difference sent to the insurance customer or perhaps a claim-denial.

Folks, the insurance company is you and me pooling our money so that if a few of us have a claim it gets paid. To try to cheat the system is hurting other people by making their rates higher. Shop around for a good rate yes but be honest about it.

It's not a good idea to gamble with your insurance coverage. The potential down-side could literally affect the rest of your financial life. Good luck.
